902 quick feedback

Hallo zusammen, as they say in the German part. I just wanted to post a quick note of my experience with the 902 I got for Christmas, as there seems to be many people with more or less the same demands as I have.

I am a mathematician, and wanted to use the device primarily for reading books (including scanned ones) in PDF and DJVU format. I just read, I do not use the browser, or wifi at all, and I haven't even used the device for proper ebooks (epub etc). I cannot compare with other devices as I haven't owned any. With those qualifications: I am very happy with my 902. The books I have used so far are opened and navigated reasonably quickly and the contrast is fine. I have also started to use the device for reading papers (PDF), instead of printing. The positive attitude towards open source was an added plus that I didn't know about beforehand, and which I hope will be continued and perhaps pushed further. It is easy to create a wishlist, and on top of mine is more fine grained navigation within a page (I'd like to pan a few cm around to fine tune the view..).

That's all! (Oh, and maybe I should add that the two-column style is not so common in maths, so I have nothing to say about that.)

Interesting. Most physical science journals are two-column, but I would guess that is because they use such small fonts when printing. It gets hard to follow long lines of text otherwise. Why don't the math journals have the same problem?

Wide margins! At least in pure maths, the paper size is often close to A5 (octavo, maybe), and with generous margins and font size, there is certainly no room for two columns (there are certainly exceptions, though, but I have never read a two-column paper). Well adapted to e-readers! I guess we have less to say than others..
