If you absolutely had to have a software package that was not approved by apple corp and/or not available from apple, would you be able to install it on any of your apple hardware? How much control does apple corp have?

Assuming iOS devices, you can subscribe to the developer program and develop and install whatever program you want on I think up to 100 devices.

Of course, it costs something, and has other restrictions.

Also, one can install Windows and dual-boot (or use Parallels to allow one to run Windows apps side-by-side w/ Mac OS X apps), or Linux and triple-boot. Moreover, there are a number of emulators available --- there was a story a while back about one computer science researcher who had some really large number of operating systems booting up on his Mac. Interesting, I love learning new things each day. Does apple sell epub format? While I do not have apple hardware I have no qualms about adding the company to my list of electronic book stores that I buy from. Competition is good Proprietary is bad.

To buy books from the iBook store, you need an iOS device (iPad, iPhone, Touch). At this time, Apple has not released versions of iBooks for non-iOS devices.

That's not at all what is going on. If you have IOS, you can only buy apps from Apple's app store unless you jailbreak the device (which costs nothing). After jailbreaking, you can buy apps from anyone who sells IOS compatible programs. You don't have to pay "extra".

With OS X, you can buy from anyone who sells OS X compatible programs.

Apple does sell ePubs, but uses a unique DRM that can only be read by their iBooks app, and for which there are (currently) no removal tools.
