B&N forum reports Android Market now Web Based

@molivrock reports that the Android Market is now Web Based at http://market.android.com/.

I tried it with my non-rooted NC and no go. I merely get the following FU message from Google: ""There are no android phones associated with this account. Please sign in with a different account."

And people wonder why I hate Android! and Google! Of course I doubt B&N would have allowed it to work on a non-rooted NC, but nevertheless what is up with Google restricting the Market to phones only?!? Are AT&T and others in bed with them?

But maybe it will work with your rooted NCs.

Here's a link to the B&N forum thread: http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/...p/841252#M7185

Google's been completely open about why the Android Market is restricted to devices with smartphone hardware up to v2.3; it's because the OS (and by extension the apps in the market) expects those components to be present. This is supposed to be changing with v3.

That is the dumbest and lamest excuse I've ever seen to support Google and Android. Google created Android and therefore they purposely created it to support phones only. Geez, even the Apple fanboys are not that smitten as to overlook the obvious!

However, thanks for the tip that the market was up, Jack. I've just tried it and full marks so far. Quick to navigate and find apps. Then click install on the app page, and next time you go to your phone, there it is!

Works for me as well. Don't see a reason to use it though.

Eh?

Google have admitted that they need to update Android to support more than phones, they've spend the best part of last year telling people not to create tablets based on the current versions of Android, they've sunk a huge amount of effort into v3 which is designed to support devices other than smartphones.

In other words, they agree with you. And v3 is here. It's just that your book reader - which is quite amazing in that it can run earlier versions of Android - can't run the new version. Yet. Very impressive the Nook rooting community.

Hi Scion. Are you saying that with a rooted Nook you can sign in to the web version of the Market?

Yes, it asked for my Google account info. My username was already there. I just had to type in my password.

it's really got to do with the hack you use to attain market. official devices work fine. my archos 101 with a hack market shows up too. the nook doesn't. it's also the only one that i have that isn't upgraded to the latest market. maybe that would be prereq to web market.

That would make sense. Presumably the latest version has code to enable the relationship with the web-based sales, and presumably if your device is hacked to support the market its essentially fooling Android into thinking you've got a smartphone.

Yep it works for me too, running Nookie .58 and the latest market app.

Also as an aside you can kick off an install on a remote device from the PC web browser. I was able to install the "Gun Bros" game from my nook to my phone

So you have a locked down Android device and you are complaining that the Android Market from the web browser doesnt see it?!? Interesting.

If the NC isnt a tablet because it doesnt have more buttons, what does that make the ipad?

I still can't get my Market, web based or otherwise, to download squat. I'm thinking of doing a master reset, re-nooting, and going from there. This isn't a show stopper but it does bug the Hell out of me.

Some have reported that's how they resolved Market issues. You might as well update to 1.1.0 now.

Last time I checked this is still America and we are all entitled to our opinions. Get over it and worry about your own opinions!

I'm soooooo amazed, saddened actually, by the illogical arguments I read on this forum, and other forums too! If you love Android then fine, but just accept that I see it for what it is a lame smartphone OS that is tied to big company data plans. And the NC is not a tablet, not even close. And I agree the iPad is not a tablet either! But at least B&N doesn't market the NC as a tablet whereas Apple would love for you to believe the iTampon is a tablet.
