Kindle Downloads
Hi
I have a Sony pr505 and thinking of getting the Amazon Kindle. Is it just the same to download the books into Calibre and then to your reader, I also have a sd card with e-books on does that apply to the kindle as well. Many Thanks ![]() |

You can also download a book to your computer, and via USB drag and drop the book into the documents folder on your Kindle (there are no memory cards for Kindle). Alternately, as you mentioned, Calibre will recognize your Kindle, and you can select books and sent them to Kindle from Calibre. A word of warning: If you want to transfer many books at a time to Kindle (like 25 or more), it is best to do it when you can leave your Kindle plugged in and charging, because the indexing process can take a long time. Kindle has to index your books for the search function to work. There is a thread here on disabling this, but I wouldn't do it. It is very nice to be able to search your books. Hi
Many thanks for your speedy response. Just been having a quick glance on Amazon and I probably wouldn't need the sd card anyway because if I am not mistaken I think the Kindle holds a lot more books than the Sony. Now its just a matter of which one 3g or 3g with wifi ![]() |

I'd get the 3G. Well worth the extra.

The Kindle will not accept your SD card as it has no slot. The Kindle 3 holds about 3500 ebooks on its internal storage.
You also will not be able to read any books bought for your Sony 505 on the Kindle until you remove the DRM and then convert them to a Mobi format. As for buying books, loading them into Calibre and then sideloading them to the Kindle - you can certainly do that. You also configure Calibre to email books to your Kindle without having to connect the Kindle via the USB cord. You can also shop directly from amazon.com and wirelessly send the books to the Kindle without plugging it in anywhere at all. |

I moved from a Sony PRS 505 to a K3 wifi and couldn't be happier.

Great choice! I *loved* my K3, and 3G is one of the few things I truly miss on my Nook Color.
As another poster pointed out, the K3 doesn't have an SD slot, but you aren't ever gonna be able to fill up its internal memory with books anyway! |

Yes, there are Calibre plugins which will allow you to convert DRMed Sony books to Mobi for Kindle. I can't post any direct links here, but if you Google Apprentice Alf, and search for Calibre plugins, you should be able to find your way to the tools. They are very easy to use.
