PRS-505 Trying to transfer books, getting various errors

Hey everyone! I'm not very technically-minded and I don't know what's going on with this, some I'm hoping someone else might:

-I've got a Sony PRS-505. I accidentally left the USB cable at a friend's house while I was traveling, and in the meantime the battery ran all the way down. I picked up a new cable at the store today.

-I plugged the reader into my computer, charged it up with the USB cable, no problem. There are some books on my computer that I want to transfer over to the reader, and I keep getting one of two error messages.
-It either says "the disk was not ejected properly," though last time I had it plugged into my computer I *did* make sure to eject it instead of just pulling out the cord.
-I've got an epub book from the public library I'm trying to transfer over, and when I do it tells me that it can't, because the file contains some data that "can't be read or written." I just checked out the library ebook today, it works fine when I open it on my computer in ADE.

I'm on a Mac, so I'm loading these things onto the reader by dragging and dropping - it treats the reader as a disk drive. I've never had these problems before. Any ideas would be very welcome. Thanks!

EDIT: Oh dear, and now the disk icon isn't showing up on my desktop. I tried a soft reset; it did nothing. I can't do a hard reset because I don't have access to a Windows computer (after a hard rest, I'll need to re-update the firmware so it can read epubs again (as an aside, why couldn't they make this thing completely compatible with Mac?!?!?!)). Have I completely borked it?

EDIT AGAIN: Okay, I partially fixed it by uninstalling and re-installing the Sony Reader Library. I'm not sure why that helped because I wasn't using the program at all, but the reader now shows up on my desktop and I was able to transfer all the non-library books to it. Library one still isn't working, but it could be worse.

EDIT THE THIRD (I'm keeping this updated in case someone else has the problem I did, then they might benefit from my solution): I got the library book to work too! What I had to do was open up the Sony Library program (apparently it's called ebook library now?), click on my reader to see the list of books on the reader, and *delete* the library book from it (It showed the library book as being there, but then when I went to use it on the reader it said "Protected page). Then, within ebook library, locate the library book from my library of ebooks, drag it to the reader, et voila! It worked.

Silly technology.

I have a Mac and 505 too. It is really inconvenient that with the 505 you have to authorize it on a PC. But, I suppose the 505 came out before Sony supported EPUB's and also before they had a Reader Library for Mac. Sony doesn't typically invest money in their older models. I think it's their incentive for people to upgrade to their newer ones. But, the 505 is so popular and was such a fantastic model that many people just don't want to part with it until it dies. That's why I still have mine even though I have the newer 950 now. Have a great weekend!
