Unabridged Audio book cheaper than eBook

Just looking at the book S*it My Dad Says on Barnes and Noble....$10 for the eBook, $8.50 for the un-abridged audio.....I think it's safe to say that proves that production costs aren't factored into a price.

I think that is generally agreed upon, by this point in time. It still surprises people, which surprises me.

However, I would like to point out the inherent danger in extrapolating generalities from single or scattered examples (which you are well aware of).

It probably indicates no more than that the audiobook has been discounted. Perhaps it's not selling very well.

Audiobooks often are cheaper than the book version, especially during Audible sales. Shrug. I expect companies to charge what the market will bear. I'd do the same if I ran a business. I do the same in the job market -- try to get the best return on my work.

If I invest in stocks, I sell at the market rate, not what they cost me. If my house goes up in value (not in this market, unfortunately), I sell for as much as I can get. If I found a diamond in the street and no one claimed it, I'd sell it at market rate, not give it away because it cost me nothing. I'd be stupid to do otherwise in any of these cases.

Production costs matter only because your competitors can set the price of products near that point and undercut you if you sell for higher. But if you find enough buyers who are willing to buy at a higher price, you're better off.

Businesses are out to make money. Why is that an outrage to some consumers?

The Agency 5 thinks that people who read/buy eBooks are second class citizens. That we are to be taken advantage of. Well, they can rot in hell as they are so wrong.

Okay, so ignore the sale. $10 list price for the ebook, $10 list price for the audiobook. His point regarding production costs still stands.

If it's 3h it's almost certainly abridged. Either that or it's a VERY short book. Even a slim novel is typically around 6-7h as an audiobook. Abridged audiobooks are normally pretty cheap.

The book is 158 pages I believe. So if its 3 hours its gotta be abridged. I read it.....very funny book, but it was not out loud and it took a little less than 3 hours.

And the only reason I brought it up was because in most cases these are more than hardbacks by quite a bit. And it certainly costs more to produce than a hardback. Which also goes back to the way ebooks are priced when they are first released with hardcovers.
