Formatting Memory Stick

Just got one of these, I plugged it in to my reader & a great big fat nothing happened.
I've tried connecting it to the PC & again its as if the stick isn't there

Any suggestions .............

P.S. The Virtual disk manager in windows 7 just reports no media in removable drive if the stick is in or not ........ That's depressing

Thought so... just checked... Magic Gate is a Sony encryption technology to copy protect stuff... doesn't work in some stuff including Sony's own... have you tried it in a separate card reader attached to PC or just in the reader? They certainly didn't work in PRS 500 but later models??? See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MagicGate

I'll have a go at plugging it directly to the PC, well I will when my dongle thinguimi arrives.

Is there a list of approved memory sticks,

Was considering getting one of these instead ?

Certainly Sony that aren't Magic Gate work fine (wife has my Sony 8GB) but personally I use SDHC cards as they are substantially cheaper per GB and work fine... currently using 16GB and 8GB

I've used Sony's memory stick pro duo MagicGate with no problems in all of my Sony readers that have memory stick slots.

I believe I got some on sale that were set up for the Sony PSP. I just reformatted them on my PC, which has a memory stick reader, in the FAT32 format.

I got one of these

Managed to format the Sony Stick to Fat32 & the computer recognises it, I can also write to, and read from it.

However with the Sony stick plugged in to the reader it still can't see/recognise/read it.

I have minimally proved the Sony stick works.

I tried plugging my reader to the computer via usb with the Sony stick in residence nothing. (The SD stick/slot combo works fine)

So I either have a faulty "Pro Duo" stick slot on my reader or the Sony Stick & the Sony Reader are not compatible.

My only option now is to email Sony & ask.

I've ordered up a 16Gb SD card to see if that works, I'm beginning to get the feeling that this device is more trouble than its worth.

I'm about out of suggestions. Is the reader and the Pro Duo card recognized by Sony's Reader Library software? If you haven't installed the software you may be missing some drivers.

Sony Lib

Response (Emma Sullivan)
Dear Sir

Thank you for your recent e-mail
I am pleased to read that you are the owner of a PRS-600 and I am sorry to read of the difficulties you are having.

I have investigated into this query further and I regret to inform you that the Sony 16GB Memory Stick Pro Duo Magic Gate Mark 2 is not compatible with the PRS-600 as states on page 33 of your manual please find link below:

http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/4153621141.pdf

I am sorry I cannot be of greater assistance on this occasion, however I hope that my e-mail has gone some way to clarify this matter.

Yours sincerely

It gets down to an older reader and a newer stick format. I've run into this same issue with MicroSD and MicroSDHC cards. Usually there's no information that excludes the format from the device, it's a try-it-and-find-out process. I know it's irritating, but really can't fault them when dealing with older devices and newer cards, it's the typical technology game of change.

Is the card usable in any other device you have? Or do you have an option of returning it since it's not compatible?

Its severely irritating, I have no other items that call for that type of memory.. The company that sold it to me are not too interested as the goods are not faulty & I have damaged the packaging it came in ..........

I'm taking a little time out to compile my thoughts then I will be letting Sony know my thoughts on the matter. I do understand the technical issues regarding the problem however I definitely do blame Sony, they charge premium money & for that I expect premium service....... This, thus far I have not got

I find that Sony do a good job where possible... when the 505 came out, it couldn't read SDHC... and clearly said so in the manual... when the firmware was updated for ePubs then they didn't "fix" it, they added the ability to use SDHC... Whilst I sympathise with your problem, I have never (in over 40 years of buying dozens of gadgets) bought/installed memory of any form without checking the manual/specifications of the hardware... you can hardly blame a company that tells you something doesn't work when you go and buy it only to find that it doesn't work...

Magic Gate was designed for other hardware which it works with fine... it's rather like buying a CD player and complaining that a DVD doesn't work in it... if you can't get a refund from your supplier then best bet is possibly eBay or trying flea market here for either sale or swap...

The reader & the stick was ordered from the same place @ the same time, granted the stick was out of stock. You might find this kind of monkeying about acceptable, me I don't ........... Go on just call me fussy

No, not fussy in this case... you should be chasing the actual retailer directly... if you bought both at the same time to use together then the retailer should know their product well enough to tell you that it wouldn't work and, failing that, refund on the memory regardless of having been opened as they sold the wrong item... not fit for purpose... go get 'em...
