Nook Temper Tantrum

I have a Nook Color (not the tablet) that I've had for about a year. It's rooted. I live in China and someone rooted it for me and then mailed it to me, but I was told it worked fine before rooting. He tested it thoroughly before sending it to me and said it worked fine after rooting. I've had a few hiccups, though. After sideloading a large number of books it is slow to load and navigate through the library. I've found that it works best to restart it after sideloading a large number of books. I've played Angry Birds on it a few times with no problems, but I have a young student who somehow manages to freeze it every time she plays. It's frozen or acted weird maybe two other times outside of what I've already mentioned, but I've found that restarting it seems to clear things out.

Well, today I was reading along happy as a clam and it froze on a page turn. I couldn't get the pages to turn right or any menus to come up, so I returned to the home screen. Once there, no menus would come up, so I decided to restart. It took a couple tries because the screen didn't seem to be responding to my touch. Once it restarted it said "read forever" and then went to a screen with the Nook logo and a sentence that says "contains reader mobile technology by adobe systems incorporated". It hasn't moved from that screen since (three hours). It doesn't timeout and go idle. I can turn it off and turn it back on, but it just goes back to that screen. I read on another thread about holding the button down for 20 seconds, then letting up and pressing it again, but all this does is turn it off and turn it back on.

I have no idea what to do next. I haven't plugged it into my computer because I don't have the cable with me now, but even if I did I wanted to see if anyone had any input for me first. The wifi has been off ever since I got it, so I don't have the updated software. Even if it were on I don't think I could get it because I'm in China. I've looked around on other threads but I haven't seen anything like this outside of someone rooting their Nook. but I wasn't rooting, I was just reading. All my books are backed up, so I could do a full reset back to factory settings, but I want to know if anyone else has had this problem or if there's a simpler fix.

Do you have an SD card inserted into your NC? Try removing the SD card.
Sometimes a bad SD card can cause boot problems.

Thank you for the suggestion, but no joy is to be had there. After some time it finally went idle. I took the card out, but it did the same thing--went back to the Nook logo screen. I brought it home and plugged it in to the computer and got a screen that said "Battery too low to power on. Please wait 15 minutes." It's been about ten and I just tried and got the same message again. The battery was at like 70% this morning, and I haven't done enough reading to run it down that low. Also, I never got the warning I usually get when the battery is at 29%.

So I got a factory reset done, but I couldn't connect to the wifi. This is probably because my wifi requires a login and a password (other than the WMA thing). So on the web page it said do the update if you can't connect, and I figured, well, it can't get worse, right? So I followed the update instructions and the update started. But now I think there's something wrong because it's not showing any progress, it's just showing a green robot standing next to a yellow triangle with an exclamation point inside. I am really trying to find a way to believe that's not an error message. There's no way to know for sure, though, because on a reader that's only for citizens of a country where English is the dominant language, someone has chosen to convey messages with green robot icons instead of clear, crisp words. I should just go to bed, but I always read before bed and I don't know how to go about going to bed without reading.

I am no longer sure if the nook is having the tantrum, or I am. Goodnight.

FYI - I have a tablet, and rooted that. I did find a few quirks. Running with a rooted device can do all sorts of unpleasant things to the file system - especially if you have a child using the device.

What I have done is reverted mine to stock, and I'm now booting cyanogenmod 7 from the SD card, and the experience is much better - many more apps are available and run on the tablet. Any damage that one might sustain by running as root is then confined to the SD card. It is not a difficult process, but if you are not technically inclined you should look into purchasing a N2A card, which many people like.

Instructions are here:
