Freezes and dropped WiFi connection

I just got my PRS-950. I am experiencing consistent WiFi disconnects while browsing over WiFi or accessing the store. I have a wireless b/g/n network with WPA2 PSK/AES encryption. The device connects fine under the WiFi configuration screen. Once you start browsing, if you pause and not click on a link for over 20-30secs, the next time you do the screen is frozen and nothing happens for several seconds and the device attempts to reconnect. Reconnects are typically unsuccessful and it eventually times out with a DNS error.

Sony support told me that I have a faulty device but if you change the encryption on the router to WPA PSK/TKIP this does not seem to happen. I was wondering if anyone else is experienceing this and whether sony's implementation of WPA2 AES is buggy.

Cheers

Rich

I also am having a problem with this same type of connection wpa2 psk aes, my first 950 wouldn't connect and froze up during random activities (not wifi related) but after a dozen hard resets and more soft resets it finally connected out of the blue. but it would only connect maybe one out of four times, and the 3g even less. I sent it back and the new one hasn't connected yet to wifi, although the 3g usually works. I don't know how to configure my wifi so that it will work. It will connect at public places like the library and then it works great, but one of the neighbors has unprotected wpa2 psk wifi, and it won't connect to it either so it appears that it is this type that it has problems with. If you figure anything out let me know!

The only way I was able to get a stable connnection is to configure the router in b/g mode only (e.g. disable n), configure the security mode as WPA PSK (not WPA2) and the encryption as TKIP. Unfortunately this now prevents other n clients from connecting to my network at higher that 54mbs speeds.

I am considering dusting off an old belkin router and configuring it in b/g mode just for the sony reader.

My replacement PRS-950 will be here in the next few days and I will be able to tell if this is a problem with my current reader or a general issue with the wifi implementation on these devices.

So I talked to Sony and they told me to update the firmware. I was skeptical, but voila! it works perfectly. It connects quickly and without any problems at all, so if you haven't done so I would recommend trying that. Good Luck!

I have the latest firmware and I still have WIFI drops. 3G seems to work fine though. I'll try b/g mode later tonight to see if that helps.

This is weird. I messed around with router settings and thought I had fixed my issues but then when I put the setting back to what they were before to try and replicate the problems, and the WIFI drops never reappeared.

I guess I'll just leave well enough alone, and wait to see it acts up again.

I used prs-950 with my router (dlink dir-300 nru) with no problems, but one day I installed dd-wrt firmware... all my devices (3 noutebooks - me, my wife and my sister) worked just great, but sony... disconnecting every 60-65 seconds of inactivity. Tried every setting in dd-wrt - nothing helped. Installed original dlink firmware back and... it works!!! Now I'm happy user of prs-950 again
