Qualcomm to build $1 billion Mirasol factory

The article goes into some detail about how the Mirasol mems display works:

Qualcomm eyes the e-reader market

Quote:
Qualcomm, which is best known for its mobile phone chipsets and processors, is to build a $1bn displays production facility. The factory in Taiwan will produce small area, low-power displays for mobile phones and e-readers.

Qualcomm aims to compete with organic LED technology, currently seen as the best low-power display alternative for always-on handheld terminals such as e-readers.

The manufacturer developed a reflective MEMS-based display technology, called Mirasol, a number of years ago.

However, this investment is a significant move to use the technology for consumer priced displays.

I had a hard time connecting the dots in the article. Qualcomm is building a $1B display production facility. Qualcomm has developed Mirasol (with description). The article doesn't say how much (if any!) of the factory will be devoted to manufacturing mirasol displays. Maybe all of it, of course...but they don't actually say that.

Ummm... What?

OLED competes with LCD, not e-Ink. I don't even think a single dedicated e-Reader actually has OLED in it. The Nook color is LCD, no?

Mirasol is supposed to compete with other color e-Ink technologies. Though it would do wonders for cell phone battery life if the display was as ultra-low-power as e-Ink (completely ignoring the response time issue).

I concur the article is a bit obscure on that point. However almost every article I'm seeing on this indicates the factory will be for Mirasol displays.

I suspect a lot of it will be for mobile phones, but most likely ebook and possibly tablet displays as well.

It is for Mirasol. It will manufacture 5.7" and smaller initially.
