40 books , 238 megs

My Kobo is using 238 megs of space with only 42 books on it Loading of the books after
selected is taking a considerable amount of time , there is a message "Loaning Chapter 5 " or something like that ...Is the loading time related to the space used or are there other reasons

And why so much space used , this is more that that taken by the 100 free books

When in "manage" mode look at the file system and see if there is something odd in terms of file size going on with one of the books you have loaded. I'm guessing that you have a "bad" something something on your reader. It's fairly unusual to find a file size more than 1.5 Mb--and most are considerably smaller than that.

OTOH, I've got several tech books that are well over 10Mb each. Could all depend on your books HarryH. They're highly variable in size, especially if there's lots of images.

Good point, 3d0g. I tend to load novels, not tech books (I am still using paper for that sort of thing).

Here is an idea of my book sizes , do not see how this could take so much space and slow things down

Grand Design 16.0 m

Geek Hand Book 6.9 m

Kobo EReader for Dummies 13.9

Harry--I have The Geek Handbook on my Kobo-1. It is 2.7 (and change) MB in size. No real size difference between the Adobe DRM file and the DRM free one.

Even this seems odd, as it is a very short book (fewer than 60 pages) and a huge book like The Collected Works of William Trevor (1330+ pages) is 2.9 MB.

I looked at all of my files sizes and see that out of 90 books, 10 are 2 MB or more, and only one book is over 3MB--and that is a 250 page novel. I am clueless as to why your version of the book is so much larger.

Re the DRM: You don't ask, I don't tell .

HarryH, I also have The Grand Design but my file is 10.6 MB, which still is a big file considering the book is like 100 pages long. No doubt, all of the images are inflating the file size beyond what would normally be reasonable. (And the book was massively disappointing so that may color my interpretation of events!)

I have noticed a strange preponderance of huge files when downloading from the Kobo service.

Having said all of this I don't notice any general trends such as a slowing down of the device operations. Some large books (in page count, number of files, or raw file size) do take longer to parse and process and they will be slower.

I would be interested to see what will happen to the file size of The Geek Handbook" if you remove it from your Kobo-1, let the reader process the change, and then download the ePUB file again from kobobooks.com (assuming that is where you got it). For confusion lessening purposes, you may want to go into "My Digital Editions" (or the Mac equivalent) and remove the older file from the Adobe book repository prior to your new download. That way you know you have the new one, for sure, on your reader.

Another thing to keep in mind, is apart from Images, Fonts files embedded within the epub will usually take a huge amount of space, wether they are used or not. If you want to try, grab Sigil and open each of your epub's and check the font folder. If you don't mind the epub being displayed in the kobo's native fonts (and it may be doing that anyway, depending on how the epub was created), remove the font files and chances are the epub will dimish greatly in size.

I believe you can remove the file directly from within Calibre if you highlight the file, rt. click==>tweak ePUB==>Explode then delete the file(s). Close it out and "rebuild ePUB", you will be prompted to do this. My larger files seem to have multiple images and font files.

Not sure if this will work with DRM or not. Sigil works with DRM free files only.

Harry, my only suggestion would be to do a factory reset or force the 1.8.3 update again from the desktop software (In Windows press Shift+Ctrl+U, use command instead of CTRL in Mac).

If any sideloaded books remain, delete them from the reader. If they are ADE ePUB files you transferred from within ADE by drag'n'drop, use the delete function on the Kobo. If you transferred them using Calibre, delete them from the reader using Calibre. Let the reader process the changes. Then load the books again and see if this persists.

PS: can you see what specific files within the ePUB have become bloated. Were extra files added? ?

Just in case you decide it is a defective reader, you may wish to load the books on an SD card so they don't have to be added again. I tend to add only a few books at a time--especially on the Kobo-1, as the processor is limited in, urmmm, oomph, at least compared to what we are used to on our own computers.
