Adventure book for a seven year old

I recently discovered that my seven year old son loves battles. He likes warfare and heroes. He loves to read and to be read to as well. Can anyone recommend some stories that I can read to him? He reads at about a fifth grade level so any recommendations for stories he can read himself would also be appreciated.

Those look interesting. I'll take a look. I didn't see anything that resembled a battle in the descriptions, but they sound adventuresome.

Thanks!

He has started on The Hobbit, but some of the terms are a bit above him and all the strange pronunciations throw him off. I'm trying to find something a little simpler right now.

Thanks!

Among my favorite adventure books that might be at his level:

A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs, first of his Barsoom series. Lots of swordplay and battles on the planet Mars.

Galactic Patrol by "Doc" E. E. Smith. Probably the best place to start reading the Lensman series. Absolutely full of space battles and daring escapades.

Hope this helps!

Robert Heinlein's juvenile novels. You'll need to be careful to avoid his later works, like Stranger in a Stange Land, the Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Time Enough for Love, etc. that are very inappropriate for a child.

But Red Planet, Farmer in the Sky, Space Cadet, the Star Beast, the Rolling Stones, Between Planets, Rocket Ship Galileo and Starman Jones are all great adventure stories appropriate for children. They don't have battles per se, but most have some fighting.

I'll second these. Red Planet and Starman Jones are quite fun reads. Just make sure it's in the Heinlein jv category, as Marcy says You don't want him reading Friday or SiaSL just yet

I'd suggest "Treasure Island". It has adventure, pirates, treasure - the lot.

I agree that they are wonderful books, but I think that 7 is a bit young for them. They were written more for the teenage market.

I read Admiral Hornblower when I was around that age and are public domain I think
Oein Coffer, Terry Pratchett, Hardy Boys, Mark Twain should be enjoyable even without battles.
