Question Calibre and ADE

Is it (and WHEN is it) necessary to download Calibre and/or Adobe Digital? I am so new to this ....

You'll need ADE if you are downloading books with DRM. You can use ADE for non DRM books but just about everybody prefers Calibre for their non-DRM books (out of copyright books like the ones on this site). Calibre also has a lot of other good features, like conversion of books to EPUB format, downloading magazines and news feeds (you'll really enjoy this once you get used to it!) and is just much more user friendly. I open Calibre every day and ADE only when I buy a new DRM'd book - and I would guess a lot of ebook owners would say the same!

Adobe ADE are for the ePUB books with DRM sold from the Kobo store. Kobo also has a proprietary DRM for ePUB books. That is what you are using when you sync your reader with the desktop application or over WiFi. If you buy from Sony, the books also use Adobe DRM. Digital books from Barnes and Noble use Adobe DRM as well, but it is a different flavour and will not work on the Kobo.

The Kobo user guide is pretty good at explaining all of this--including explaining a bit about how to use Calibre for library management.

You'll also need ADE if you want to borrow ebooks from the library.
