Scanned PDF on PRS-950

Just came back from Bestbuy testing scanned PDF on PRS-950. In summary, the results are very impressive.

I have two scanned PDF books, all around 30MB, 600 pages. Library page can show the first page of scanned PDF on index very quickly once insert the SD card. Fonts in full screen portrait mode are purely black and white, no grey shaded area at all -- just like reading a book. Although it's tiny, it is even more clear than printed paper.

Portrait mode page turn is as fast as text file. But still much slower than turning a real book. In landscape mode, one page turns into 3 pages. Turning within those 3 is fast. But when advances to the next PDF page, there is a noticeable tiny delay comparing to a text file.

Overall, PRS-950 is very impressive and usable in real PDF reading. Compare to PRS-500 I have owned, the improvement is enormous.

So the fonts are not anti-aliased? Is that what your saying?

That is true with all e-readers.

Judging by the size of the PDF files, I would say they are made up of scanned images, and not of OCR'ed text. So the text wouldn't be anti-aliased, per se, but who knows what smoothing algorithms are used when sizing the images to fit the screen.

I have scanned most of my technical books in this way (it's impossible to OCR equations and sample code properly), so this information is useful to some of us.

Would you take a 950 over 650 for PDF reading ? The 650 is wider, isn't that more comfortable than the narrow 950 ?

I have a PRS950 and use it to read PDFs after trimming the unused white space (margins). If you think about it, the text are of almost all books has proportion which is simliar to the screen of the PRS950.

Also, I've found that printing a document on "legal" paper size (when printing to pdf) gives a good page to read on the 950.

I own both 650 and 950. The later one is so much better for reading technical PDFs. Especially after removing margins. Text that looks too small on 650 looks just great on 950.
