Scott Lynch's Red Seas Under Red Skies. It's the second in the Gentleman Bastard Sequence. Though I suppose it could stand alone, I'd recommend reading the first one, The Lies of Locke Lamora.
Red Seas Under Red Skies is not a pirate book, per se, but a significant portion of it does take place on a pirate ship and in a pirate port town. As con artists, the main characters are anti-heroes, but likeable. The setting is fantasy, though there are no elves, hobbits, or the like. |

Dudley Pope's Ned Yorke series is all about Pirates. Nice ones with morals! Eh, you can have too much of "gritty" sometimes. The first one in the series is "Buccaneer".
"Captain Blood" by Rafael Sabatini is the classic pirate-with-a-heart-of-gold story, and is available in the MobileRead library. One of my all-time favourite books. George MacDonald Fraser wrote a book called "The Pyrates". It's been a long time since I read it, but I remember it made me laugh... I was about 15, though. |

There was a great series around 2004+ by Gideon Defoe with each book titled something like:
The Priates! In An Adventure with___________ The blanks were Scientists, Napoleon, Ahab, and Communists (i.e. 4 books) They were fantastic, quick reads, that had a comedy element to them. My brother-in-law loves all things pirates and loved these books. There may have been more to the series, but those four titles are what Amazon has now. Wikipedia might tell more. Do I actually have to be the first to mention Robert Louis Stevenson?

Go to manybooks, look under the pirates category, find some books you like, then pop back to MobileRead and download it from the library here! Simples.

A book from a pirate's perspective ... hmmm ....
What about Michael Wolff's (how appropriate is that for the name of a pirate biographer) soft lensed biography of Rupert Murdoch? |

Westward Ho! by Charles Kingsley is available on the Project Gutenberg site. So it's great and it's free.
Of course Treasure Island is free and it's a classic. A General History of the Pyrates by Daniel Defoe by the author of Robinson Crusoe. |

Right after I posted this a topic I began reading Operation Time Search by Andre Norton. It's a book I saved from the curbside and just so happens one third is escaping pirates and the other third is with pirates.
Good book by the way especially for one I found in the trash. Edit: thanks for all the suggestions now Im up to my neck in Zombie and Pirate literature. Last edited by BenBanned; 01-27-2011 at 01:11 AM. |
