confused by tags

I frequently tidy/remove all tags from my calibre library & , as expected, if I select view metadata for any one book there are no tags to be seen.

but when I do a format conversion of that same with add metatdata picked on the look & feel screen,then a list of tags appears as part of the metadata inside of the book - how come - where is that data being stored.

are there 2 metadata sources e.g. one in caluibre metadata.db ( maybe) and one within the epub files collection ?

I am not sure what option you mean by the add metadata picked on the look & feel screen of the conversion dialog? I cannot see any checkbox of that type there? Normally one would not be changing anything on that screen from the defaults.

sorry - its on structure detection page, not on look & feel page - tick box for insert metadata as 1st page in book.

i cannot recreate the bug though, so maybe I'd previously added some metadata to a book version before clearing all library tags & it somehow stayed in the jacket.html subfile.

is that "insert metadata" tick box applicable to all formats or is it another instance where epub is a special case ?

That option is about generating a page at the start of a book from the metadata held in the calibre database.

Note that if you have a book on which that has already been done then you want to make sure that the Remove First Image option is checked or the page generated previously will still be there as I think it is inserted as an image (I could be wrong there).

The Insert metadata as the first page creates a book jacket that has the title, author rating, tags, series, publisher and comments. In epub this is marked as jacket.html, in Mobi I believe it is inserted as part of the book. In either case this is not a image it is text that has configurable parts customizable under the stylesheet.css in the CalibreConfig\resources\jacket\ directory.

In epub books the book jacket is automatically replaced whenever a book is converted as long as the existing book jacket was created with calibre version 0.6.50 or later.

The Remove First Image option is for removing the first image and in epub has nothing to do with the book jacket.

i think i converted from mobi to epub and observed that the old jacket.html had not updated - that is, I think, consistent with your explanation above

I then converted back - epub to mobi, and it did update.

yes it is that option, I dunno how you can use it to replace cover picture though - IF that can be done it should be an option on edit metadata screens
- you'd want to delete any cover images then find how to force use of text metadata as a replacement
