Sony Readers on Ebay

I'm considering selling my PRS300 on ebay. There are sellers (on ebay) that say their PRS 300 comes loaded with a few ebooks. I'm trying to understand how. If the PRS is "un-authorized" (Sony Library) before selling, doesn't that make the ebooks loaded on the reader unavailable? How does that impact ADE?

In considering selling mine, I intend to remove the ebooks & un-authorize the PRS. I don't want to "advertise" books that a buyer can't access.

If I'm posting this in the wrong area, please forgive me!

You can use Calibre to transfer [free] books. The reader doesn't have to be authorised to open them.

The buyer can read them until they use ADE or RL themselves. The moment they lock into ADE or RL the books are blocked for them.

I've seen some like that too and I don't think the seller legitimately bought the books. I could be wrong obviously but I do know that none of the Harry Potter series is legally available in ebook format so.....

Thanks for the info! With ebay's rating system, I think I'll un-authorize the reader & remove the books.

I gave my 505 to my sister last month, but today she gave it back to me. Our retinas are both rotten, and she can not read e-ink either. I guess I'll sell it. It has barely been used, but looks like hell because I modified the metal by dropping it onto concrete a few times.

Oops, wrong model for that idea
How about burning some on CD so they can add the books from it to get them started?

I'm curious as to what you mean by that - saying it's the wrong model. The best way to sell it is to deauthorize the reader and wipe it clean of books. Or leave the sample books on it like it was when it was brand new.

Any new user can find the free classics on their own just like if they were to buy the reader from a store. There's nothing wrong with that.

I've been toying with selling mine and getting the 350 so I've been watching what they sell for. Many sellers I've seen sell it just like we bought it from the store, empty. Some do sell them with the books on them but if we don't have the right to sell the books with it, it's not right and it's not allowed by eBay. Just like there are rules against selling a used iPod with music on it. It's not allowed and if listed that way will be removed.

Sorry, it was referring to my first suggestion to load some books on SD card but of course your model doesn't have one.

Sometimes, people just prefer convenience and simplicity. Although free classics are easy to get if and when you know where to find them, that doesn't mean that the new buyer does know that. That's why I proposed putting some on CD so they can load them right away without trawling the Net. You wouldn't be selling the books, you would be giving them away.

Just my 2p worth.

I, too, would like to sell my old PRS600 in ebay. If I have many free books I've collected from smashwords or even on the sony site and want to send them along, I should put them on a CD and send it with the reader? Are we saying that once I deautorize the reader from my sony library, and they authorize it once they've purchased it, all the books on the reader will go away?

If the books are DRMed, regardless if they were free, then they will not work with the reader once the reader is deauthorized. Authorization is tied to your account and as long as the reader is authorized under your account the books can be viewed on it, but once you deauthorize the reader the books won't work. At least that is how it is supposed to work. If the books are stripped of DRM, then they can be viewed on any Sony reader.

Shopping for anything else Sony related? Maybe consider trading it into a Sony Style store as you are guaranteed $50 credit for a working ereader.

Thanks. So, Sony has drm on their books like Amazon? What about the free ones? Also, I've bought some books on Borders and they read fine on my Sony. Do they have drm on them as well? I assume that my smashwords freebies will be fine, correct? What if I put the freebies on a CD? Would they then be able to load them back onto the reader once they authorize it to the sony site (if they choose to do this)? Thanks for your help. I'd hate to sell a reader with free books on it, then have them suddenly be unreadable.

Yes, Sony and Borders both have DRM like Amazon. The difference is that Sony and Borders use the same type of DRM and that's why you can read Borders books on your Sony. Amazon uses a different type of DRM.

Even the free Sony books have DRM. When the book is open on your ereader, select Options and then Info. At the bottom of the list, you will see something like "Digital Rights Full, Viewable" on a DRM book. On a book without DRM, there will not be a category called "Digital Rights" in the list. The free books that I have from Borders also have DRM. I do not have any books from smashwords so I can't comment.

You could download some well made books from say MR and sell your reader on eBay with books on it.
