Downloading books directly to the Nook

I just got my wife a Nook 3G+WiFi and while the 1.5 firmware seems to have cleared up most of the reservations that I had about the Nook, one issue still remains.

I pulled up fictionwise in order to download some of my books onto the Nook, but didn't seem to be able to log on (it redirected me to a blank page after entering my log-on info). I wasn't certain if this was an issue with fictionwise or not, so I went over to manybooks.net and attempted to download an epub. The Nook gave me a notice stating that downloads were not available in this edition...what's the deal? Is the Nook only able to download books directly from B&N? If this is the case then I don't really have much use for the internet connection on the device seeing as both my wife and myself would only be using it to download books and I don't shop on B&N exclusively.

I was considering getting a Nook for myself, but I really don't want it if I can't download books from independent bookstore using its web browser. There are plenty of ebook readers out there that DO have this feature (my current BeBook Neo among them).

Yep, the books can only be directly downloaded onto the unit from Barnes and Noble. To get books from Fictionwise or ManyBooks, you must download them to a computer and then sideload them through the USB onto the nook.

Also, the web browser is not usable over 3G anymore, only through WiFi.

If you prefer downloading directly from those sites, I suggest doing more research into which devices are capable. The nook is not.

The web browser in the regular Nook is really pathetic and there is a lot it cannot do. It doesn't bother me much, because I see the Nook as mainly an ereader. I don't think it is all that much of a chore to use the PC to buy books from independent ebook stores and then sideload them onto the Nook. IMHO.

I just don't see the point in paying more for the 3G+WiFi if the only thing that the 3G connection can do is hook you up to B&N. I have a laptop and a tablet for web browsing, so the Nook would only connect for updates and book downloads.

Seeing as I generally remove DRM from any purchases made at B&N even the Nook's limited internet function seems useless to me.

We recommend the 3G primarily to those who want to buy books from B&N but don't want or have a wifi router at home. Otherwise they can pop into the store or use their wired computers to buy the books and sideload them until they get to a wifi location.

I feel the nook web browser was an afterthought. It was added on the 3rd update along with games so you'd have some small way to connect, but was not designed for heavy web browsing or downloading. I never use it and instead use my phone for the web.

Yep, if I really need to get something, I have my phone rooted to do the 3G Hotspot for free....in that case I can connect up to my Calibre Library through Trook and download a it do the nook....granted my Nook is rooted.
