An other "what Im doing"wrong?? with Ipad

hi and thank you for reading my post,

I have an Ipad, connected by its cable to my Pc(window XP). I have Itunes with Stanza and other ebook reader programs. I dowloaded calibre 0.7.57 version (the last one i guess). And I have plenty of ebooks (source a Hungarian ebook library with extentions doc, rtf, pdf)

But the calibre does not recognize my Ipad.

I dowloaded the calibre twice.
Removed my mouse from USB
turn Itunes, Ipad, computer, on and off. Unpluged pluged Ipad.

The report (click preferences, miscellanious, debug device detention) said:

The only book i could "put" to my Ipad via (drag and drop) Itunes is the book which came together with the calibre. All other books are not transfered. I dont even have a button for "send to device" on the calibre's panel. Why?

I dont have a clue what the heck im doing wrong? (except that i am not a puter guru, im a usual user)
pls help )

thank you

You do not need Calibre to recognize your iPad! The recommended way to talk to Apple devices is to use the "Connect/Share" button and then select the Connect to iTunes option. This makes Calibre treat iTunes as a pseudo device to which you can add epub format books via "Send to Device" which then appear in the Books section of iTunes.

The transfer between iTunes and the iPad happens the next time you sync it with iTunes. Note that this is for syncing books with iBooks. If you want to use a different reader on the iPad you have to do the transfers manually or (probably much easier) do them via WiFi from the Calibre Content server.

If you have iBooks installed on your iPad, and connect your iPad to your computer, you should be able to add books from Calibre using Connect/Share and then 'Send to Device'. This puts the book into the 'books' folder iTunes and from there you can drag it into the 'books' folder that will show up under your iPad. Not very elegant, but how mine works.

For Stanza, if you don't want to set up a server connection for Calibre, the easiest solution is to install 'Dropbox' on your iPad and on your computer. Once you do that, when you have Stanza open on your iPad, you will see the Dropbox login under the 'Share' icon. Anything that you have put in your dropbox will be available to you in Stanza, so you don't even need to connect your iPad to your computer. (Do remember that both Stanza and iBooks work best with epub format books.)

cheers

itimpi, Leep, thank you for your reply.
My problem is, that I dont have the "send to device" button on the calibre panel. When i click on "connect/share" - connect to itunes, nothing happens. The 'send to device" button (which suppose to be after the magnifying glass - i saw in the tutorial) does not show up.
thank you again)

Have you tried starting iTunes before you click the "Connect to iTunes" button. In theory clicking that button should start iTunes if it is not already running, but I have definitely seen cases where it does not seem to do so.

The Send to Device button will only show up when you have connected to something.

Have had the same problem...it's a iTunes thing. The solution I've found is to start up iTunes and plug in my iTouch/iPad before I start Calibre. Then when you start up Calibre (at least with the newer versions) you get an alert suggesting that you disable the Calibre device driver. Do so and then choose Connect/Share 'connect to iTunes'. Now you should see the 'send to device' icon. When you send a book to Device, or drag a book into iTunes, it goes into the 'Books' folder in your computer iTunes library. I just open that folder and drag the books into the 'Books' folder on my iTouch/iPad. You should see the book syncing and when you eject and open iBooks on your iPad, the books should be there.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I like the combination of the dropbox and Stanza better for my iTouch, but my friend uses iBooks on her iPad which is why I'm familiar with this problem.

cheers

Note that if you are using the Connect to iTunes method it is not necessary to have the iPad plugged in at the time you send books to iTunes from Calibre. You can later sync iTunes to your device at a convenient time regardless of whether Calibre is running.

The other point is that it is a good idea to have the Apple Device driver under Preferences->Plugins->Device Interface plugins disabled. This stops calibre from directly detecting an iPad/iPhone/iPod directly if it is plugged in so that all the interactions continue to go via iTunes.

If you are using Dropbox as the main way of getting your books into Stanza have you tried calibre2opds to give you a nicely structured catalog to access the dropbox based books? That scenario is one of its commonest use cases.

Thanks for the input itimpi. Will give calibre20pds a try. Have seen it mentioned here from time to time, but have been lazy 'trying something new' when the old way gets me by. I infrequently use my iTouch for ebooks.

Is Stanza available for the iPad? I seem to remember that it wasn't at one time which is why my friend and I went to iBooks for her iPad.

cheers

Yes. The very last update that was released for Stanza was to make it a Universal app that was iPad aware and utilised the larger screen area. Unfortunately since then it looks as though Amazon (who bought Lexcycle) have decide to kill any further development of Stanza.

There are other OPDS aware ereader apps for the iPad - the one that is growing on me (and is still being actively developed) is QuickReader.
