Are you still reading?

I bought a Nook Color and jailboke it. I use the Kindle app to read my books. It is a great screen and allow me to study books that have many hyperlinks. Basically I bought it to read one specific ebook. It does that great. But.......

The NC has so much more capability. Calendars, task list, Engadget, BBC News, more calendars, more task lists, the cricket scores, a browser, two, three browsers.

So, I find myself (agreed lack of personal discipline) surfing, viewing, testing, adding, removing, more than I do reading. You see on my Kindle 3, that is all I could do - read. On my NC I can do much more. For some that is perfect.

So, I was wondering, is there anyone else like me, whose actual reading of books has declined since getting a NC and particularly jailbraking a NC?

Perhaps I need to switch to a Sony PRS650. My particular study book (a lifetime of reading there) is available as an epub. It has a touch screen.... as no distractions.

I think that may be the issue. If you're only reading within the Kindle app, no wonder you're looking for other stuff to do.

If you plan on buying epubs (Sony compatible) why not just use the stock reader and library or install the Aldiko reader app (version 2).

Is the issue that the bulk of your books of interest are only available in Kindle format or is it a price issue? Just trying to understand what was the initial attraction to the device and why it's not keeping you interested.

I've finally gotten into the groove of prolonged reading after I stopped moaning and groaning about the shortcomings of the stock homescreen, reader, and library (including the non-calibre-recognizing shelves).

Like you I was doing this and that, barely reading. I've reached a plateau since installing the Aldiko reader (version 2). The fact that I no longer care about the shortcomings of the stock device (because I rarely access those features now) allows me to actually enjoy the device on all levels. It's customized to suit my needs.

Ive gotten distracted by customizing my Nook Color as well.
But Im slowly getting back to actual reading now that Ive got my NC setup like I like it.. until of course some customized ROMs start coming out for the NookColor.

SCION.. how do I know if I have Aldiko (version2) do I need to get the Premium version?

Right now the only way to get version 2 is with the Premium version. In addition to being totally revamped, it does the Adobe DRM thing for those who need this. The other version doesn't.

Here's the thread where it's discussed (including screen shots). You may know this already.

I have to admit to a certain level of, ahem, distraction the first few days after rooting my NC and my reading time dropped off dramatically.

But like Scion, once I had everything customized and tweaked to my satisfaction, I'm back to reading 4-5 hours on my days off and at least an hour after those ugly 12+ hour shifts in the ICU.

To be honest, I haven't read much yet, mostly to a lack of available ebooks of the books I would love to read and a lack of concentration for my subscripted magazine. Hope it will get better once my exams are over and I found some of my desired books

Besides customizing I've used it mainly as a video device so far

I'm thinking it would have been cheaper to buy the book

Yes I too have suffered from the same ahm issue. Part of the problem with the nook is that it is not a full android device so there is a lot of work in getting to act like an android device. With hacks here and there.

Then once you get past that hurdle it's finding the right apps and then using the apps vs reading.

It took me several weeks before I actually started reading on the nook. The trick is to find a place with no wifi and then you will not be tempted to play/read the other apps that require internet access.

Now I'm back to reading and find I'm tweaking my nook less and less.

I use my NC to read more than anything. When I first rooted, I was using it more to play games and web browse but its affinity wore out quickly. I still prefer a real keyboard over virtual so I tend to use my computer for those needs.

No, the books are available in Kindle format and epub. It's just that I find myself nerdishly attracted to playing with a cool new device and getting it to do things that it wasn't originally aimed at doing. It is afterall a book reader for reading B&N books (helping them thereby to make money and avoid bancrupcy). But, then rooting it makes it into a different beast. Who wants to just read books now, when you can play with 4 different calendar systems, a dozen todo lists, synker, the Android Market..... ah and games. It has become a monster, filling up my every non-working moment.... a mini-me NookDev, an android.........................

Have to report this post

Of course I will have to report this statement to the moderators. A paper book when there is a $249 gadget and $49 folding case to replace the $24 book? Absurd suggestion.

....I've lost it... my marbles that is. rofl:

But serious in a moment of sanity: the book is large, much larger than the NC. And, taking the "Ignatius Catholic RSV Study Bible" into my wife's church (LDS - Mormon) would raise a few eyebrows, whereas a Nook color just recieves envious looks (particularly from those lugging around an enormous iPad, or those squinting at the screen of a mobile phone or ipod Touch).

Got caught the other day by my wife:

She: "What's that you're looking at on your NC?".
Me: "Nothing, my dear" .... snatches the precious from my hand.
She: "I thought you loved me? Why are you reading this sort of literature? And the pictures".
Me: "It was just this once. I have never done it before. I was tired. I am so sorry. It will never happen again".
She: "I'll forgive you, but you must download the Book of Mormon".
Me: "I promise. I will always be faithful from now on."

Close one my peeps.

Must leave for my medication now.

Hal.

I have been reading more since I got the NC than before, when the only books I had were those things made out of paper. I think I read more because I take my NC where ever I go.

by the way, where did you get the e-version of the Ignatius Catholic RSV Study Bible? BN doesn't have it.

I intended to use mine to read ebooks. I've loaded quite a few books on it, but my main reason for rooting was so that I could install the Kindle app. Yet and still, I find myself distracted by the Android aspects of the device, such as games and other apps. I haven't read anything on it in days, but I spend hours on the Nook every day. I need to get back to reading!

Why the move??

Curious as to why this thread was moved to the Nook Developers corner? It isn't about developing on the Nook, but if you still read on the Nook Color once it is jail broken.

Odd decision, but not a problem.
