PB IQ and FBreader

Hi all,

I have an IQ, and installed FBreader onto it, but am at a loss when it comes to making books available for it to access.

I've had a good play with Astro file manager but have been unable to locate the directory where I should be pouring the books into. The same goes with Aldiko. (I can't even find the two books that came with Aldiko in the file system.)

My Windows file manager has no problem seeing the books with its file manager on the installed SD card.

How do I get extra books into either of these apps?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Cheers,

Michael P

Aldiko is easy:
1- Create a folder called ebooks on the SD card.
2- Create a sub-folder called import.
3- Copy any books to be read into the import folder.
4- Launch aldiko and locate the option "Import ebooks". It is new and experimental. It take a while to run for each book and might glitch if you import a lot of books at once.
What it is doing is a Calibre-like sorting and cataloguing of books by their metadata and copying them to author-named folders under the ebook folder.
Would be nice if it gave you a choice to create the folders yourself, as FBReader and coolreader do.

What *I* did was go to the FBReader settings panel where there is an entry for the location to set as root.
Once that is set it just browses the directory structure from there.

Happy to. I was under the impression that everyone else had it figured...

I tried fjtorres' method for FB reader (change default directory to root) and everything went pear-shaped, with FB reader crashing after it tried to import a do largish import, and continuing to do so each time I opened it - I guess the books that came with the IQ overwhelmed it somewhat. My sole solution was to remove FB reader and reinstall.

The issue I had initially - and which prompted this thread - with FB reader turned out to be a result of trying to access the external SD card whilst having it linked to the PC. Disconnecting resulted in access to the card and I was able to add books to the library.

Cheers,

Thank you. Didn't someone start a Wiki for the IQ? This should be added to it.

All of these issue resolutions will come in very handy for newbies to android tablets like me.

Didn't mean to confuse anybody.
What I said was that you can set FBreader to see *any* location as root. Precisely to avoid the slog of it trying to index the entire device at once. So you can set it to ony index the SD Card or just a specific folder in the SD card.

With the latest FBreader update, you can also tell it *not* to load the metadata for every book it sees.

Hi. New user PB701. Need some help. I have tried several ereader apps but seem to prefer Aldiko. I purchased a book from Kindle but want to use Aldiko to view it. Guess the same question for other marketplaces where I would purchase/download a book and want to view in Aldiko (Overdrive, B&N, etc). Seems like this should be simple but I can't figure out. Thanks.

For the non-Kindle ebooks you'll need to track down a copy of Aldiko 2.0 which supports DRMed epub. It is *not* a free app, though.

For Kindle ebooks you would have to learn how to remove DRM and how to convert them to ePub.

Thanks for quick response. All of this sounds like a lot of work. Is Aldiko 2.0 even available? Is there another alternative reader that I would be able to do this with that is similar to Aldiko?

Aldiko 2.0's been out for over two weeks:

The only other ADEPT-capable reader apps I know of are Overdrive and TXTR.
Sony has one coming: Real-soon-now.

Still sounds a bit buggy. Not quite ready to experiment. However, the article mentions: "You don’t have to put your titles in /import folder anymore". Is this some way you can create a folder, put in your books and read them in Aldiko? I think I have heard of this before. Do you happen to know how to do this without rooting my device?

Thanks. But won't work for Kindle books, right? So I should pretty much not purchase any books from Amazon unless I read them through the Kindle software, correct? Not ready to learn how to mess with DRM (yet). Kind of stinks since they seem to have best prices and best selection.
