Is there any way to "see" your Kindle on your PC via Wi-Fi?

Hi all,

First time post on this very useful forum. Very happy with my Kindle 3 received at Christmas - just a quick question that I can't find an answer for on the forum...

Is it possible to view the Kindle folders on my PC, via Windows Explorer, using only the Wi-Fi connection? I know I can do this using the USB cable, but as I'm trying to drain my battery (takings DAYS, which I guess is a good thing ), I don't want to use the cable and start recharging at the same time.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

I'm certainly not aware of any way to do this, unfortunately.

I don't know of any way to do it via Windows Explorer, but I think you can SSH into your Kindle. Have a look at this thread for that.

Thanks guys. I'm not desperate enough to go hacking or jailbreaking (if that's what the SSH thread is suggesting - certainly complex, anyway), so I'll just wait until the battery has drained.

Welcome!

Why are you trying to drain your battery -- and why not try to drain it by reading?

Welcome to the forums, orlok! I don't blame you for not wanting to try the SSH method. Seems like overkill to me.

I just thought it was good practice to drain the battery on the first couple of uses, though reading through some of the threads on the forum I may just be spinning my wheels unnecessarily...

And, of course, I am draining it by reading (couple of hours a day, at least), but it is taking sooooo long.

And thanks for the welcomes

Kindle runs on top of Linux, a different operating system so any kind of file sharing must be done via SAMBA which I guess implies hacking your Kindle device; SAMBA emulates Netbios and the way Windows shares and connect to folders via network/wifi.

Now, if the Kindle is connected to your access point, I guess is visible and you can potentially access via ssh or any other method; I have not tried but I am assuming you will have to hack it anyway and start the ssh service. Amazon won't leave a Device with open ports and no security at all.

Yes, spinning your wheels. A LiPo battery, that the KINDLE uses, does not need or benefit from 'priming' and requires no special initial charge. The characteristics and description of Lithium batteries are common on the internet, maybe starting at the Wikipedia would be good, then follow the 'external links'.
