standard Nook not changing font on a book

I just purchased "The Passage" by Justin Cronin from B&N for use with my standard Nook (at level 1.5). One odd thing - I cannot change the font, even though it says I can - i.e. the other font choices are there and not disabled, and when I pick one it shows that box that says "changing fonts" or whatever, and it takes a few seconds, but then it shows the same font all over again (looking like the default, Amasis). I tried switching it to Helvetica and the light Classic and it still looks the same. I can switch the font size.

I know my Nook is working because I CAN switch fonts on other epub books. Anyone have this problem with this ebook or other ebooks?

Have you tried to reboot the nook? If not I would try that and see if it helps.

I believe the font change is something that can be controlled by the publisher. I know I can't change fonts on some of my books either.

Nook User Manual, page 121 under "reader text fonts":

Some eBooks and periodicals specify the text font in which the digital content is displayed. If the publisher specifies a text font, then the content is displayed in that font if the font is embedded in the content.

I tried rebooting, which does not help. It apparently is as kilmar and Ken said. I think that the Nook should detect this situation (it seems like it must know it!), and grey out the font choices, as I seem to remember seeing with some PDFs. Anyway, it sure would be nice to change the font!

That seems reasonable, but the thing is that NOOK doesn't know if all of the text in the e-book is in the embedded font. So it has to give you a choice of fonts in case it comes across some text that isn't forced.

(Example: a math e-book might use the changeable fonts for most text, but include an embedded Greek font which is occasionally used for Greek letters.)

NOOK never gives you a font choice for PDFs. They either use the embedded fonts or Light Classic.

You're right, Doug. Also, thanks for the clarification about PDFs never allowing a font choice.
