The Christmas present thrill begins to pall ...
You know how it is when you open the box and the toy doesn't have any batteries?
Well that's how I'm feeling about my Sony Reader so far. You hope it's going to be easy but.... First of all it wouldn't charge up at all. So I got on the net & discovered maybe I would have to use a USB socket on the back of my PC instead of on the front. That worked. Problem One solved. But can I download anything? Nope. Not yet. Tried for the free classics on the Sony Site. The instructions say use Open rather than Save. OK, but then the site says Open With What? and lists various programs. So how am I supposed to know which? I tried Photoshop, as its Adobe. Then the instructions say the download will go straight to the Reader Library. No success so far. I have to say, books may be bigger, but so far they're easier!! |

I have a lot of faith in Sony to provide a great product such as an ereader, however I have heard a lot of horror stories such as yours about Sony bungling their on-line services. Not just in the PRSs I haev heard the that the Viao servers were unable to take orders for their various modles in the past and the Walkman servers got the different models mixed up, they got confused the X series stuck into the E series players. Friends of mine that own Sony PRSs recommend downloading ebooks from Kobo in epub format then uploading it to your reader. They tell me that Kobo is a bit better than Sony when it comes to having their technical duck in line as it relates to ebooks.

Hi Neil and welcome to MobileRead. If you don't get an answer here, try posting your question on the Sony section.

Hi, welcome to MR from the Netherlands. I've heard good stories about the Sony; just post your question at their forum on MR.

Photoshop isn't going to work. You first need to download the Reader software. You can do that by clicking any book link at ebookstore.sony.com.
Make sure you restart your computer after downloading the software. Did you follow the instructions in the manual? I'm not really sure where you are getting these ""free classics" on Sony's site, they will make you download the software and you can't download the books from their website, it has to be done through the software. |

Use the Adobe Digital Editions for Sony downloads!
Quote:
I LOVE my sony reader - I have the PRS600. I HATE the Reader Library, and don't use it anymore to put books on the Sony. I use Adobe Digital Editions to download and put all my ePub and PDF books on my ereaders. I prefer using a Sony AC Power Adapter cord for charging up my Sony - it's quicker than the USB port/computer - you can find them where ever the Sony is sold. On your computer: You can use any ePub or PDF books format on the Sony Reader, so you can shop any ebook seller that sells these two formats (Kobo, BooksOnBoard, Harlequin, etc). I love this about the Sony!!! ![]() As I mentioned above, I use the Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) to put ePub & PDF books on my ereader devices. This is a free download www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions . You will need to make up an account through them, which is free also. Purchase your ePub & PDF books from your ebook seller, then SAVE them on your computer, don't open them. I made a File Folder on my computer that I save all my Digital Books to: "MY DIGITAL EDITIONS". Then in Windows Explorer, click on the download file .acsm file, right click "Open with" your book with Adobe Digital Editions. ADE will then open up, then begin downloading your book. OR, if your file is already on your computer in a ePub/PDF format, Open ADE, and "add book to library" at the left top - this is a drop down. ADE will then load your file, and you can then put on ereader device. When you want to put books on the Sony, you will run ADE then hook up the Sony reader to computer with the USB cord. The first time you hook up your new reader to ADE, it will ask you to "register" your device. Put in your Adobe account info (ID & password). This is a one time thing. Your SONY will show up on the left side of the books covers in ADE, and you will just click and drag the book onto the SONY. When you are done, close ADE and disconnect device from computer. Let your Sony update the books, and your books will be in your library. ![]() Hope this helps!!! ![]() Last edited by bookratt; 12-27-2010 at 05:21 PM. |

I had a PRS-600 (have since passed it on to my son) but I used Calibre to sync books to my Sony. The Sync function in the Sony software was less than helpful.
I also found lots of great books in epub format, and without DRM (so no need for ADE) on Smashwords, Baen Books, Project Gutenberg, among others. I'm sure there's lots available in the MR library as well, in epub format. I download them to the computer, copy them to Calibre, then plug in the Sony and transfer them to the device. |

YOu've gotten some good information already. I agree that you need to have a program in which to open your book. I have used both Adobe Digital Editions and the Sony Software. I actually like the sony software (i'm in the minority). Calibre is very widely respected here as well (I use for conversions instead of management). Once you have one of those downloaded, opening the book will open the program and life will get a lot easier.
Welcome! |

Good to have your company, Neil. Just have a little patience and you'll find that wee Dony about the best reader out there. You might want to get yourself a mains charger. And it's a good idea to download the free Calibre Library software to store, catalogue and convert your books from one digital format to another. I've never had the slightest problem with mine in the two years I've used it (heavily). Good luck and best wishes. Another Neil M
