My wife got a Nook last May. It's 3G stopped working, so they sent her a refurb.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My wife is rather ticked off at this history of problems, and we are going to try to get a complete refund from the company (if they can't get us one that works for more than two months after three tries, it's time to give up). Has anyone else has similar problems with the Nook, or are we just having a run of bad luck? What about with the Kindle? What is the most /reliable/ reader today? |

Oh, and I forgot the part where customer service kept asking me "are you sure you didn't buy it on eBay?". More than once. That got /me/ pretty ticked off (I had been being rational until then)

I realize that this is just going to turn into another list of anecdotes, but it's what's being asked for. I'm one those folks who's had a nook 3G in daily use for over a year with zero problems. But then, I never had a problem with my Sony units either.

After reading this, it seems that the most reliable reader today is the plain old paper book. For what it's worth, I've had a Kindle DX for about two years and Kindle 3 since they came out. No problem with either one so far (other than I lost my first Kindle 3, which had to be replaced).

Definitely sounds like they need to send you a NEW unit, stop with the refurbs. While they should be refurbed well, who knows who's controlling the quality and what's going in or out. After THREE units, that is not right.

I agree - I'd escalate this up the chain of command - maybe even stop at a store and talk to a manager. I know they say not to go to the store, but 3 faulty devices in a couple months is too much.

Seems odd that i would find myself defending the nook even though I do not have one and don't want to pay that much of any ereader but here goes. Mass production of anything is great in that it makes things cheap and easy to produce and in large quantities. But it has one major problem, FUBAR and SNAFUs happends on ocasion (for those that don't know FUBAR is a navy term that stands for - F**ked Up Beyond All Recogintion and SNAFU stands for - Situation Normal All F**ked Up). These things happen ocasionally and the best that the company can do is to send out a free replacement, and it sounds like BN has done that a few times. Each time you buy anything that is mass produced be it a Kindle, Nook or a Dell PC there is a 50/50 chance that you will get a FUBAR and/or a SNAFU. There is no way for the company to control that, the only thing that the company can do is to send a refurb repalcement, and there is nothing saying that the repalcement wont be worse then the origninal. Sounds like your Mrs keeps getting one of those FUBARs, its not BN its the mass production concept by which they are made. No one is out to get you or her, its just that she keeps getting unlucky and getting a FUBAR.
I ahve had two Libra Pros thus far (the first one got smashed, but thats another story), and the first was 15% FUBAR. This one is fine, these things happen. Its not you its not her its not that she's cursed its the randomness of the manufactering process. |
