Why I'll never buy another Sony, any Sony, ever again

It was bad enough that my PRS-700 has never synch'd correctly over several Reader updates and two different laptop/operating systems. All sorts of hours spent chatting with tech support hasn't changed it either.

Then is was my wife's 3-month old PRS-600 with a battery that wouldn't hold a charge. I understand hardware problems, but what I find incomprehensible is how incompetent Sony Repair and Customer Service is. They have had the reader for 3 weeks now for a 7-10 day turnaround. My wife and I have spent hours on the phone being told what ever comes up off the top of the head of the first tier support people in Laredo. It finally comes to pass that it has been shipped, but to the wrong address. Efforts to reach a supervisor is met with "he's not in today".

Efforts to get somebody in Tech Support to own the problem gets nowhere, they just say to deal with Laredo.

It seems that Sony just doesn't care. And I was all set to replace the PRS-700 with a PRS-650, not any more. And they can forget about the high-end DSLR I was considering also. I just hope that they realize that customer service in not an intangible.

I think the man has a point.

Its not just with their e-book readers.

Their customer service on blu-ray DVD players is horrible as well.

i'll be honest, my sony receiver had so many electrical issues (including spontaneously turning itself on and off and smoking, well documented design flaw btw on that model which sony eventually had a recall on it) and i've never had a vaio with a screen that worked past a year or two (they cant seem to get the ribbon cable thru the hinge right).

sony isnt that great. that said, i do think their ereader is one of the best on the market right now, in terms of feature-set.

I have had Acer, HP, Gateway, Compaq and Sony laptops (no Dell). The Sony was DOA and after a replacement died I took a 15% re-stocking fee and cut my losses. The only TV that failed before I upgraded was a Sony.

Sony does not have a good track record with me. Oh Yes, I also had a Sony compact camera fail a couple of months after it went out of warranty.

I'm a glutton for punishment , so I'm going to give the 350 a shot. But, I'll wait a while to give them chance to stabilize the manufacturing process. Maybe "Black Friday".

Regards - John

Sony has a great track record with me. My Sony TV is over 8 years old and never gave me a problem. I'm on my fourth Sony Vaio computer and thrilled to pieces with the design and reliability. I've had five different Sony E-readers and never had a major problem. I've never even had problems with their software.

Me too, I've had 4 different readers (300, 350, 600, and 650) and I love their T series cameras (T1, T100, T200, T500, TX7) and every game system know to man (of which, I've only had one ps2 die) and an older tube TV

They've got a great track record with me!

but ya, i'm a fan of these ereaders for sure.

I don't understand the negative generalities about Sony. Any manufacturer has some problems.

Sony has always served me well, including with monitors, cameras, ereaders, etc., etc. And this includes their followup service.

The problem is, who is better at customer service? If you own enough stuff and/or read enugh reports like the OP's nobody has zero defect quality and great customer service. Manufacturing is in a rush to the bottom, where cost is everything.

Name a company that you experience top-shelf customer service from and you can still find negative reviews of them.

I've haven't really had any huge issues with the Sony products I've purchased. If a problem did arise, it was dealt with accordingly.

Very true. There are lemons in every product line.

I forgot about all the Sony music products I've had over the years. My tuner is still a Sony, my ancient cassette player is a Sony, the spouse has some musical equipment and PlayStations from Sony. All quality stuff.

And the designs are sexy. Everytime I pull out my 350 in public, it draws attention. I know it's shallow but that's what I want from a toy.
