Hi, I have been trying to watch demo etc but it will not load. Now, here is my question: I have four ebooks that I bought from Amazon and for some reason each one downloaded in two formats - azw and mbp. All I want to do is to have them in either ops 2.0 or pdf (or whatever Sony E-reader can read). Can Calibre convert either of them? Any one easier to convert to and from than the other?
Thanks! |

Unfortunately Amazon books which are DRM protected (the copy prevention) can not be converted to work on your Sony device without removing the protection first, which I do not know how to do (nor is anybody allowed to explain on this forum). Did you JUST purchase them? If so, I'd contact Amazon support and explain that you didn't know that they wouldn't work with your device and they might give you a refund -- then you can purchase them from Borders or from the Sony store. If not, then I'm afraid you're out of luck if you're not prepared to figure out how to strip the DRM.

You can probably find a better answer by reading up a but on the forums, but I'll give the quick overview:
The Sony readers (assuming that you have one of the newer versions) use a file format called ePub. ePub files are the generic format that work on the majority of eReaders (except for the Amazon Kindle). ePub files can either be unprotected (like those that come from sites like Project Gutenberg) or protected (if they're purchased from Barnes & Noble, Sony, Borders, etc). Not all ePub protection is the same. The one that you need is called Adobe Digital Editions, which includes ebooks sold by Borders & Sony. I think that Barnes & Noble uses their own format that is designed to work with the Nook (even though the files are in epub format, they're protected differently). Amazon uses its own format, the azw files that you're seeing, which only works on their Kindle. There are a few books that you can buy from Amazon which can be converted to work with your Sony, but it's probably easier to just buy from a compatible store if you're not familiar with the process. If you have one of the older Sony readers they used their own format. I'm not certain how that works, but I think that the Adobe Digital Editions software that runs on Windows/Mac converts the protected ePub files to the Sony format to work specifically on your device. |

If you can read the books on Calibre then they will not be drm'd.

There is a simple way to strip DRM, Evalena (instructions all over the net). But, nio matter how morally justified, it's illegal, so we can't discuss it openly here. Good luck and best wishes. Neil
