Can I de-authorize reader like this?

Hello everyone! I'm really in a sticky situation and I'd appreciate any suggestions about how to fix it...

So:

I have a Sony PRS-505. I used Adobe Digital Editions on my computer. The email that I used for my Adobe ID is one I no longer can access. Unfortunately, I no longer remember the password for my Adobe account. (I realized it was more hassle than anything; didn't really use it)

I want to give the reader to a friend as a gift, but of course I need to de-authorize it first. Is there any way at all to do this with being able to log in to my Adobe account?

Any suggestions would be marvelous. Thank you!

If you have a computer still authorized for ADE (in ADE click Library>Authorize Computer... to check), open ADE with your reader connected. Your reader should be listed on the left side of the ADE screen. Press Control+Shift+E. You should see a deauthorization dialog in which you can select your reader and deauthorize it.

I dont know why but that has never worked for me, nothing happens at all. I have always deauthorised readers by performing a hard reset. This has worked for both 300 and 350 readers.

That will remove authorization from the reader, but it won't remove it from Adobe or Sony's list of authorized devices.

I did that on a PRS-900 that I sold and then the new owner couldn't authorize it. I wound up calling Sony for support and they manually removed it.

On the Adobe sign-in page (below) there's a link to contact customer service. I'd use that. If you have another Adobe ID, they can even merge it with the old one.

Ah, I didn't know a hard reset would reset that as well! I wasn't able to do it via the computer so I did a hard reset with my 505 and it was successful - de-authorized, and authorized to my friend, who is thrilled with it.

Thanks for the help!

What's a hard reset? Is that the same as "reset to factory defaults"?

No... it completely resets to original state (or last firmware update if one has been performed) including wiping memory. Involves pressing reset and then a combination of buttons dependant on which Sony being reset... look in the manual for your Sony or check here https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=112522

Vivian, as your device says Kobo, not having one, I can't comment on relevance for that device but if that's all you've got then ask/check in the Kobo sub-forum for similar info...
