New nook owner looking for library resources
Hi, new Nook user here. I'm trying to find library resources for the nook. I do belong to my local library but from what I can see, they have next to nothing available. I'm surprised there isn't maybe somewhere online where you can even pay a montly fee and download books to read, something like Netflix for ereaders....lol.
Any ideas would be appreciated. If I get started on this thing, I know I'm going to be reading a book every few days and I don't want to rack up the national debt. |

Welcome to the forums!! One of the best places to start is right here, there is a library available on this site with lots of books lovingly formatted by our own members. Look at the top of the page and select ebooks from that top menu.
Project Gutenberg is another good place for public domain books. Happy Reading! ![]() ![]() |

The books on MR and PG are out of copyright books. I believe the OP would want to read newer copyrighted material too.
The answer is Free Library of Philadelphia. $15 for the year if you are not a resident of Philadelphia. They have one of the better ebook selections though no library can have a collection to rival its print collection yet. |

I was able to use the Chicago Public library because of a riciprocal arrangement. Now my suburban library has joined a consortium of other suburban libraries, and I have borrowing privileges there, also. (I also used my daughter's card at times, but 3 cards actually were too much.)

I live in Australia and the choice of books for my new Kobo is very very disappointing if you dont go for "chick lit" or the latest crime thriller. I would not recommend any Aussie to buy an ereader just yet as the publishing world is still rooted in a 19th century protectionist mentality, just like with the dead tree versions.
Is there a way to work around the DRM as the UK has many good books for sale?? Can I get Brits to save and send as an attachment? Or are there "better" ways... ahem! |

aussiebro, the traditional print sellers in Australia (Dymocks, A&R, Borders) do not have a great selection or great prices, although it's improving all the time. There are a lot of other shops around for ebooks - I like Kobo for a general selection and Baen for SF/F. A lot of people like Amazon. If you gave us some genres you like, maybe we can suggest some.
With regards to geographical restrictions, it's usually not the retailers at fault, it's the publishers and in some cases, authors. The contracts are region specific so if the publisher for that region either is not contracted or chooses not to publish an ebook version, then readers in that region can't easily buy them. |

Thanks very much, will keep searching - can't wait to use the new toy and I have many of the 'classics' already in print. I have not tried the kobo store!

I received a Nook Color for Christmas and like the idea of downloading ebooks from libraries. Thanks for the information!

It would help if we had some idea where you were located. For example, if you're north of Boston, the North of Boston Library Exchange libraries subscribe to Overdrive's services collectively (noblenet). I'm sure there are people in your area familiar with similar deals. Regards, Jack Tingle |

Thanks to all who posted. Does the Philly library have a decent selection of contemporary fiction? I can't even see what's available without a card.
I'm just outside Pgh, PA, my county library network doesn't have anything except non-fiction document type ebooks unfortunately. |

A little tangental to the topic. For those of you who sent away for cards at the Free Library of Philadelphia, how long did it take to get your card?

Many Books (http://manybooks.net/) is pretty handy and has multiple formats. I don't think I'm seeing it mentioned above but sorry if I'm repeating.
