A Kindle question

I'm thinking of getting one for my folks. However ... they do not have access to any sort of WiFi signal at home, so to be able to get books "seamlessly", they'd need a 3G model I take it?

If you don't have WiFi access you need 3G in order to be online.
So, K3 Wifi+3G will be your friend.

Did I read well? ... that's illegal, lol ... tell your kids not using others wifi connection or they can get in trouble, years in jail and I'm not kidding. Not unless is an open connection, like B&N, McDonals, etc.

If you have zero access to Internet, all the time, yes, a Kindle 3G is a better option. Keep in mind that you also need to check 3G coverage in your area.

Do not forget that even without wifi or 3G, you can download or buy books from a coffee place with internet, put that in your laptop hard drive, and move to Kindle via USB.

A lot of people have a wifi router hooked up to their DSL line, for example, to have access throughout the house. They are using their own wifi...

Actually, you didn't seem to "read well" at all.

My folks have an ethernet high speed connection, with zero access to a WiFi signal. Are 3G signals that iffy? They live in a major metropolitan area, not East Podunk.

Router! Easy to install and you will get wifi in minutes. I used to buy Lynksys Routers. Not the best, but they are easy to configure. I do have built in wifi with my cable service but if they don't, a router will give you more flexibility.

But if they already have high speed internet, no wifi, Kindle wifi should be ok. You just download locally and then move the book(s) via USB cable.

So long as they have internet access and a computer, they are good to go. If they download "Kindle for PC", and buy an Amazon book, it shows up in Kindle for PC in like 5 seconds. Then it can be sent straight to the usb connected Kindle. I forget if it's automatic or involves a button, or just double clicking the book cover. Either way it's ridiculous easy. Edit: or there could be an option to do it right on the Amazon website, if the Kindle is connected.

It's also a bit more pleasant to shop Amazon through a regular browser than through the Kindle device imo.

I have WiFi at home and don't even turn on the Kindle's wifi.

Easy enough, spend $30-40 for a basic wireless router or access point, and set it up to use WPA for them, so their wireless can always be on and automatically sync when they buy something from Amazon.

True, as far as you state, but if the book is DRM locked, as almost all commercial books are, the book won't open on the Kindle device. Amazon's DRM locks the file to a particular device, in this case the Kindle for PC.

There is no need to use Kindle for PC to download books form Amazon to USB sideloading onto a Kindle device. When purchasing, you can opt to download the file for any selected device (selected from you list of devices registered to your account) instead of having it sent over Whispernet for reception on the device via WiFi or 3G.

Thanks -- I'm not going to be around during the holidays, so I'd have to show them how to do side-loading in person later in the year.
