Help me decide which cover to get for my new Kindle

I've been a Sony Reader user ever since I joined MobileRead, but I took the plunge a week ago and got a WiFi Kindle. I'm an instant convert in terms of ease of use, readability, etc etc. It's a beautiful machine, so naturally I want to get a nice and preferably protective cover for it. I'm one of those, however, who really don't fancy shelling out a pile of cash for an official Amazon case.

I got this Tuff-Luv carry-case a few days ago, but wasn't really impressed by it all - little enough I've decided to send it back. It was described (on Ebay, anyway) as being a 'hard shell' case, except it was anything but 'hard'. It also just felt and looked pretty cheap. If anyone's had a positive experience of it, let me know and I might just change my mind; but another demerit is that the Kindle 3 is a very tight fit inside the case, and I don't want to have to struggle at yanking the damn thing back out when I'm out.

I was thinking of swapping it for this instead, an Eco-nique 'Hemp' brown patterned cover. As you'll see, its Amazon reviewers have given it rave reviews. The only thing that makes me hesitate is that it's from the same company that sold me the case I didn't like. So again - any satisfied Eco-nique Hemp Brown Kindle cover owners feel like reassuring me it's the biz?

Also - while we're at it - I always used to carry my 505 in its leather case around inside a plastic DVD-style box that kept it reasonably safe from bumps in a shoulder bag while I was on the train or bus. The Amazon's just a bit too long to fit inside it. Any ideas for some kind of box - pencil box, tin, whatever - that would fit the Kindle?

at the risk of sounding like a broken record, oberon covers are quite stunning and very rugged. I have traveled extensively and even skied with my kindles in them. never a worry!

They are indeed gorgeous (the Oberon covers), unfortunately they're also even more expensive than the official covers. I should possibly also add I'm in the UK, so even if I wanted to spend that much, I'd probably have to pay for postage - and they sell them on Ebay UK on 'buy it now' for £99. But if you've got one, you're a lucky git.

I have several actually *blush*. I'm not certain how the shipping to the UK works with Oberon. I know that they are available through Amazon also, not sure if that affects anything

Well, in the Netherlands the customs are expensive. Just, an half hour ago, I paid 26 euro customsfee for my birthdaypresent, the black Wild Roses Oberon cover, which I'm getting gifted at the end of the month. Ordered via Oberon website.
I've got the red Wild Roses for the Kindle and the Green Avenue of Trees for my Ipad. That has financily set me back dramatically, so I have to economize a bit on something.
Still, it's worth it. They are sturdy. Dropped my Kindle once; no harm done.
And they age beautifully.

I have the hemp cover and absolutely love it. I originally went for it because I didn't really want a leather case. To me they look kind of cheesy, especially the official one with the textured leather.

Its soft and feels really nice to hold, almost like an old cloth book if you like that sort of thing. Since its hemp and not smooth, dust won't be as noticeable.

It has two pouches on the inside cover, one with transparent layer for a photo. The spine on the inside has elastic to put a pen (not that you would need it)

However I will point out the bad stuff:

1) Its very tight. Takes a bit of effort to get the Kindle in there. Also the top part doesn't give enough leeway for the screen so depending on the angle of the light/sun it may add some extra shadow to the top of the screen. Or it could be that I'm not strong enough and haven't pushed it in as far as it can go. This is not really a big problem for me though but thought I'd point it out.

2) Its a button clip, not magnet. Again not a biggie, but thought I'd mention it.

I'm a major Moleskine geek, so I love that the official Kindle cover makes my Kindle look like a Moleskine too. I'm very happy with the cover, it's sturdiness, and the protection it gives my Kindle.

If I didn't love my lighted cover as much as I do - I'd be torn between either the Hemp eco-nique cover you mention OP. It really looks fab plus I like the fact it has an inside pocket.

The other contender would be a Tuff-Luv Flip style case because I had one of these for my Kindle 2 and I really loved it:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tuff-Luv-Apo.../dp/B003ZUXVSU

Very reasonably priced on Amazon. I paid much more for my Kindle 2 Tuff-Luv cover.

A very sturdy, nicely made cover plus handily converts into a stand which is perfect when you're doing Hands-Free reading:

That Eco-nique "Hemp" cover looks really nice and cloth made out of hemp is very sturdy. As you pointed out, garygibsonsf, the reviewers on the UK Amazon site you linked - even the one that only gave the cover three stars - all seem to be very happy with their purchase, as is neonbible. The cover is being sold by the US Amazon site as well and all but one of the reviews on that site are also positive. I would go for it, if I were you.

I have an Oberon cover and really like it, but it is expensive, and I think I would be pretty happy with the Hemp cover, too. (Not that I have any plans to replace my Oberon cover - it is definitely a keeper.)

Looks like I'm heading for the hemp cover, though I'll certainly keep in mind the point that it's a little tight. Maybe that means it's not likely to fall out if I manage to drop the thing, and I think I might actually prefer the button clasp to the magnetic clasp on my old 505. Now all I need is an old pencil box to hide it in when it goes in my shoulder bag.

Do you read your Kindle with these covers on?
I like the naked touch, but unfortunately the back panel in my K3 is somewhat "loose" right at the back of the side buttons. So when I hold it it somewhat recedes and annoys me a lot. So I'm thinking about buying a cover that I could use easily for reading (not too heavy or bulgy).

Well I haven't removed my Kindle from my hemp case ever since I got it. If you need to remove your Kindle every time you read, perhaps consider a slip case instead?
