Classic Vampire Novels or Short Stories

Apart from Stoker's Dracula, I'm looking for the names of any other classic vampire stories, preferably, but not necessarily, in the public domain. I'm not interested in anything written recently (in the last ten or twenty years). Thanks. The reason I'm interested in this genre is that I'm currently working on the first draft of a novel in which the main character dreams she's visited by vampires (she actually has health problems), and the scenes in which they appear are getting a little cliched, so I'm seeking inspiration in old classics. Thanks. |

How about watching the 1922 German expressionist classic Nosferatu on YouTube?

Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire. George A. Romero, of Night of the Living Dead fame, made a wonderfully weird vampire movie called Martin back in the seventies; there was a paperback novelization at the time. |

I've read Anne Rice's Interview several times, and seen the movie; saw Martin ages ago and didn't like it. Thanks for the suggestions. Nosferatu is a film I've never watched, partly because its not in English (or silent, I can't remember which) but mainly because of the unusual appearance of the vampire. I'll give it another try. Thanks. |

There are two Nosferatu movies, the original silent 1922 german movie by Murnau, and the 1979 remake by Herzog. You can find the 1922 Nosferatu on YouTube if you look. Now it's considered a masterpiece of german expressionism. The one by Herzog is also well done.

I've read some of Anne Rice's vampire novels including Interview. I quite enjoyed them for what they are but don't regard them as true vampire books any more than the Twilight series and the other sensitive new age vampire genre. If you are prepared to tolerate a novel written in the 70's Stephen King's Salem's Lot is an excellent tale of the traditional vampire updated to more recent times and transplanted to a small New England town.

Several vampire books part of Kindle's Daily deals today. By Bella Forrest. I never heard of them as that genre is not my cup of tea, but they all have a couple thousand reviews and generally highly rated. 1.99 each.

There is also Fred Saberhagen's Dracula series. If you don't mind a different type of vampire book you might want to try The Passage trilogy by Justin Cronin, they are more recent than you'd wanted, but it's a very different take than many other vampire stories. | |

Thank you for picking up this thread. I had abandoned the writing for a few months, but over the past few days I've been considering going back to it and finishing the first draft. These books will provide much needed inspiration for the vampire scenes.
