how open is kobo?

how open is kobo compared to eg. the kindle, nook and the sonys? For example how difficult is it to modify the system config, install user apps, etc? Kindles and nooks need hacking, jailbreaking or rooting, what about the kobo?

The directory tree could be seen if you have sd card firmware
image. System is embedded, so to say not so many things to
load cause hardware restrictions. Still no jailbreak and it is a
small chance it will ever be for original reader. Almost all com-
mands are sym links to busybox. Root and admin have lines in
passwd file. Ftp and telnet are available for root to use, and
versions of kernel and rootfs are 1.60, whatever that means.
Udisk is in vfat and yaffs2 mounted as mtdblock3. Personally,
I see no reason to dig further, since it reads epubs, what was
my intention.
I'm aware of various software running over jailbreak and do
like some of those projects.

I think its open to all epub and pdf books regardless of whether or not its encrypted with drm

The kobo reads ePubs but it doesn't follow the standard thoroughly (no UTF-8). So far, no firmware update is announced to correct this. I would love to put my own fonts on the device for foreign language learning. So a hacking venue would still be a welcome addition to it
