First post
Hi, I'm just trying to see how this works. My wife is buying me a Kindle3 for Christmas and I have an immediate question --- is there any way to load books from our local library into the Kindle?
Thanks! |

Welcome to MobileRead, DeVaux.
The answer is "yes" but you are probably breaking laws to do so. It involves stripping the drm. Now.........If you 'borrowed' the book, read it and then deleted from your device and computer, some might say they don't see the difference between that and borrowing a paper book. But you need to make your own decision. |

Good to have your company, DeVaux. The problem with Kindle is that it supports only Amazon's Mobi format for ebooks. Libraries tend to offer ePub, which has become the industry standard elsewhere. All library books are locked by DRM (Digital Rights Management) software. Only by stripping the DRM can you convert ePub into Mobi through library software like Calibre and upload a book into your Kindle. You can find iunstructions on how to do this all over the net. But it's illegal, so we can't discuss it here. Kindle is NOT the only reader on the market, you know. Best wishes. Neil

Hi DeVaux and welcome to MobileRead. I have a Sony 505 that uses ePub and borrow eBooks from the local library. In fact, back in October, I borrowed a book from the Fairfax, VA library while at 32,000 feet on a flight from Baltimore, MD to Dallas, TX.

Welcome DeVaux, Enjoy your new reader. I am sure your library can tell you if you can or cannot. MobiPocket is a converter you can download for free, but I couldn't say if it would work with library borrows.
