Start Up Time?
Can anyone give me an indication on how fast the NC takes to start up? I.e. from completely powered off until you can start reading books?
Thanks! |

Just a quick comment. Most people would not shut it down the entire way, but just let it suspend. From that it's about 3 or 4 seconds to start reading.

Mr. Goodbar is correct. The power switch on the side (unless you hold it down for 20 seconds or so) just puts it in to suspend. When you power it back on, it takes longer to swipe your finger across the screen to unlock it than for the screen to come on.

Does it use power when it's suspended? I'm the kind of person that may go for a week or so between reading, so would you recommend I completely power down to save the battery or should I just suspend if I don't plan on reading for a week or so?

I haven't had mine long enough to get a good feel for the battery drain, but suspend will always consume more power than just shutting it down. A full shutdown will essentially not drain any power. If you can live with the boot time than that probably makes sense given your reading habits. I tend to read every day so I prefer suspend to save myself from waiting thru the bootup process.

Suspending it will consume roughly 1% of the battery charge per hour.
EDIT: The 1% per hour is wrong, suspending the NC doesn't consume nearly that much, so please ignore it. Last edited by Selcien; 12-07-2010 at 02:38 PM. |

So at that rate it can only stay suspended for a maximum of 4 days and nights, assuming no real use, before the batter dies. So I'd be better of suspending if I didn't expect to reuse the NC within a few hours of my last use.

I never really tested the difference with Wi-Fi on or off while suspended, never noticed any difference over short periods of time, which brings another possibility, that the amount it draws slows down the longer it's suspended. Personally, I've found the advertised battery life of 8 hours to be pretty darn close to what I get, so I cannot imagine that they'd be far off in regards to how long it can stay in a suspended mode. |

When my NC is in suspend or sleep mode, I do not see an apparent drain in the power at all. Of course I didn't leave it in sleep mode for days, just hours. I check the battery before I sleep and check it again the next morning, the battery power stays the same.

I've charged my NC over night ever since I got it, last night I suspended it instead of charging it. With Wi-Fi on, since I forgot to shut it off, nine hours of it being suspended only took off 1%, but I think it was even less than that as I believe that it was very close to dropping that percent when I suspended it.
It's definitely not even close to using as much as 1% per hour, so I apologize for giving out bad info. I will never know first hand how much battery is used from it being suspended for a week or longer though as I will never go that long without using it, but it looks to work well enough that you should only have to worry about turning it off when you're not going to use it for a really long time. |

I noticed that too. I was very impressed in how little battery life the nook color uses when left suspended. I would still turn it off completly if I knew I wasn't going to use it for a long period of time. But yeah quite impressed with that aspect of the battery life. |
