DXG battery life
Hi,
I have to re-charge after about 5 days, is this normal? Whispernet off Auto rotation off All books indexed 2-300 books on device - about 10% of memory only No music on device The only images are book covers (oh, and some really ugly dead authors ![]() No lit cover 5 days for me is about 20 hours of use, about 2-3 books. This isn't much of an issue - it's only a matter of plugging it in after all - but I'm getting nowhere near the 3-4 weeks Amazon promise. So, is this normal for a DXG? Thanks. |

It might not be actually getting and seeing a full charge. Try leaving it on the charger overnight. Then, in the morning, unplug it and do a settings/restart. I did this and it seemed to improve things quite a bit.

5 days seems kind of low for wireless disabled on a DXG but I'm unsure how many hours they're actually expecting you to be reading each day.

always needed to charge much much earlier as specified...that's true for all devices i owned in the last 2 years. sometimes they say reading PDF takes much more power than ePub or mobi, indexing takes a lot of power and so on.

I think, that´s not normal. I have to charge my DXG after 2 weeks, and I use it almost every day.

I believe an average days use is 2 hours so 20 hours of reading is the equivalent of 10 days of use which sounds low too me given how you said you are using it.
What really matters is the number of page turns. E-ink readers use power when they turn the page. If you are reading 3 books in 5 days then you are probably turning the page pretty frequently which is using the battery. 5 days sounds low to me, I am guessing that is about 1,500 page turns. I would call Customer Support and ask them. |

Now, having said that, 5 days with moderate usage does not sound ok to me, but it depends of how many hours you have spent so far reading (turning pages) and downloading, that's what consume most of the battery life. You should give a second chance and wait. 1st charge last couple of days because people usually download several books and play with 3G connectivity. However, Kindle DX battery life is not as much as regular Kindle so you should expect about 7 to 10 days with moderate usage or about 3 weeks with very low usage. |

I get about 30-40 hours of reading time, with wireless and everything off. Make sure books are not indexing in the background, that burns up battery really fast.
The longest time I ever read on mine without a charge was when I first got it - I read 4 books (the 3 millennium books and some other decently long novel)... Paperback versions of these books are all 500-600 pages + just so you have an idea, probably around 400 page turns each on the DX with the size 3 font. Battery life goes by how many times you turn the page, not how long it's on. If you are a fast reader, and you turn pages quickly, then it won't last as many "hours" - average person probably reads around 300 words/minute, which is what amazon bases their lasts weeks and weeks off of (They assume you will only read 1-2 hours a day @ 300 wpm). If you read 500+wpm you could easily consume all of the battery life up in 30 hours of use. |

I charge my DX about one every two weeks with an average of around 6-8 hours of reading a day.

Hi,
I also just received my first Kindle DX this week, and the first charge lasted 4 days with lots of use and wireless on (so I'm not complaining yet). I was wondering if there's any point in leaving the device charging overnight even if the charging indicator light has already turned green. I'm a software person, not a hardware engineer, but it feels a bit cargo-culty to do so as the green light probably means that the overcharging protection already cut off charging anyway. Any enlightenment for me? ;-) cheers, Sonja |

I recall to see a limit or suggestion about leaving your device plugged all the time but I don't remember very well if that was in the manual or other site. Having said that, I see no reason to leave your Kindle overnight in order to get a charge. Because the type of battery, it will not get memory or charge faster but I do not think over night charge will damage or break something. My advice would be if you are at home or planning to charge, just unplug when led turns green. That is what I do with my two Kindles and no issues so far. Enjoy your Kindle and happy reading! ![]() Last edited by jocampo; 01-09-2011 at 12:10 PM. |
