Using Kobo Software/Purchasing books in Aus

Well, I bought the kobo ereader for my mum today, quite like it, in the lilac it's very pretty

I was going to use calibre for the Kobo, but I've been rethinking it. I currently use calibre for my Sony ereader, and love it. But the all of my books are freebies, non DMR'd books. I think my mum will be wanting to buy new releases, probably all from the one store. She's really good at using itunes and her ipod, I'm hoping to create a similar setup with the Kobo. She's unlikely to be hunting around for cheaper deals or specific books, really just looking for a setup that's easy.

With all that in mind, I installed the software that came with the Kobo. But it looks like the software won't allow me to add already existing books, only purchase books, is this right?

Also, (I'm in Australia) when I go to purchase a book through the software on my desktop, even though all of the prices are listed in AUD, the checkout won't let me choose an Australian address, the drop down for the state only has American states?

you can use ADE, adobe digital editions to add books either purchased or from the desktop to manage your library, the same as calibre.
as for your other question i'm not sure about the address. did you create an account on kobobooks? you might be able to set it all there.

Did you buy your Kobo from Australian Borders? If so, you can buy books from them, BUT, they are in receivership so I would be very wary until the stores are sold and the new owners sort themselves out. At the moment Australian ebook owners are in a poor situation with both Borders and Angus & Robertson in limbo, leaving only Dymocks still operating. Due to ridiculous restrictions we are often unable to purchase ebooks overseas. No doubt other readers can provide a list of sites that will sell to Australia. I have stopped buying any ebooks until the Australian sales situation is sorted out - or until I get some DRM stripping software.

Yeh, we bought the Kobo from (Australian) Angus & Robertson, I did realise that the company has had a fair bit of a shake up recently, didn't think it through and what it could mean to the ebook industry over here. Might wait it out a while to see what happens before purchasing any books.

I signed up through the A&R software for an account, it didn't ask for my address/country. But then I went onto the A&R website and logged in using those details, and added my "local store", so presumably it knows I'm in Australia.

Next step looks like it'll be getting ADE installed on mums computer, thanks for the info

Unless you're planning to get rid of your e-readers if A&R goes under, all you need to do is make sure you fully download a true e-pub (rather than the "k-epub" version the Kobo/A&R software will download) version of the book with ADE then you will have a copy of it whatever happens to A&R.

I'm in New Zealand so the situation is similar to you. Although you have set up an account with A&R you need to set up a separate one to shop at kobobooks.com. Once you do this kobobooks will recognise you as being in Australia.

I buy all my books through the website (kobobooks) rather then via the desktop ap (in my case Whitcoulls - the equivalent of A&R). Download the epub from the website into ADE then you can transfer it to the kobo.

Enjoy
