Format confusion?

I have a sony 650 touch and I'm kinda confused with regards the different formats.

I've alot of pdf files which I transfer as pdf's to the reader. However, some of the file fonts cannot be enlarged on the reader?

Whats the difference between converting pdfs to Epub/LRF??

Converting pdfs to EPups can take a few mins sometimes...is this normal?

Some PDFs are made of page scans without OCR (conversion to text) and cannot have fonts enlarged because they don't actually have any fonts, each page is simply a picture.

LRF is the original format used by Sony, now superseded by the open format ePub.

Converting to ePub/lrf can take a very long time depending on the complexity and internal layout of the PDF... I've had PDFs take over 20mins not to mention some failing completely due to internal problems...

Obvious question.....Can I convert this files which are Pictures(so to speak) into a format that I can enlarge in the reader?

Another little thing I find annoying, which probably can't be help is that some pdf's have two pages side by side, and when I transfer this to the reader its not very functional at all.
Any way to solve this to you know?

Sorry for all the noob questions, its just my first ereader

Only way, to deal with picture based PDFs, is to extract the individual pages and use OCR or try OCR on the entire PDF... haven't done myself but others have claimed some success. As far as 2pages side by side, that also sounds like pure scanned picture page and preceding applies. Base problem is in the nature of the beast... the Sony is an eReader but a lot of PDFs aren't text based...

what elcreative said.

I have also tried some scanned-as-images-pdfs and yes of course the fonts can not be enlarged.

A properly created pdfs can be enlarged, but depending on the editing it will not reflow correctly, e.g wrong page/paragraph breaks, overlapping fonts etc.
At least I know one of my pdf breaks like that.

OCRed pdfs, if not edited properly will result on this case.

This is only my opinion though, I don't see converting them to epub will help. But if you are willing to put time to it you can edit the epubs afterwards, see Sigil on that.

pdf editors exist but they are very pricey.

If you have an earlier version of adobe acrobat, you can try a plugin called Heidelberg. (Mine worked on acrobat 7). It can split pdf pages and show each half page one at a time.
Or if you can convert your pdfs into pics, then you can use a Japanese freeware called Chain LP to split them up and save it as a pdf file again.
Sorry if these sounds like much trouble. They are the only ways I know.
I wonder if the quadrant mode helps with your problem?

no the quadrant mode on the ereader doesn't help.

Yeah obv some of the pdfs I have have been scanned and are therefore only a picture...and in some cases its two pages side by side.
So I kinda stuck there on that problem. I will just have to forget about trying to get them onto the ereader.

feel bad for you chicoelnino..

You might do better with a larger device like 950, kindle DX or even iPad for your pdf needs..
