Books about slavery?
I'd like to read about slavery in the United States, preferably from the slaves' point of view. Any suggestions?

I believe I put one up here on MobileRead, by Frederick Douglass, which I think was in Sony's LRF format. I'm sure some other Members will list other material, as well.
Any Google search should also list a rich variety of choices. Search for the phrase, "Slave Narratives." Don |

There was an excellent project done in the early 1930s in which government employees went around interviewing the living ex-slaves and writing down their narratives, as well. I think it was simply called "Slave Narratives."

That's what I was referring to on PG. There's volumes and volumes of it, arranged by state.

I don't have a recommendation for you, but I would suggest against The Book of Negros.
I thought the writing was overdone. I just couldn't see what was making the main character so good and special other than the author constantly hitting me on the head with the fact. |

In addition to what's been suggested, you might want to check this out:
http://antislavery.eserver.org/narratives For a wider look that includes slavery and beyond, I highly recommend this book: http://www.amazon.com/Warmth-Other-S.../dp/0679444327 |
