JBL - No internal memory

I don't know what I did, but I currently have no memory on my JBL internal drive. I cannot load anything on the drive, it is completely blank. Resetting and restoring defaults does nothing.

On my SD drive I've reloaded the current update (16e) numerous times, but after the install the FIRMWARE folder reads: "jetBook-Lite-v0.l6 incompatible format" and all the files in the REFLASH_NOR folder read: "incompatible format".
Also the ADE Folder does not load so I can not read DRM epubs or PDF files.

Now the strange things is, that I can read books on the SD drive. Epub, prc(mobi), pdb (ereader), text, and html, but no DRM.

Does anyone know how I can restore my internal memory and get the currently update to load properly to be able to read DRM epubs? Thanks.

The "incompatible format" message is ok, since only ebook formats are recognized (epub, txt, pdf, rtf, mobi and so on)

If you did an upgrade all the books that came with the device are erased during the update proccess (there is an update warning about this in the device or in the manual). You must load these books again. If you didn't made a backup you can download all at jetbook's website

About DRM and ADE read the forum, I think that someone (Ken?) made a post explaining how to register the device with ADE.

By the way, if your ADE folder was in the internal memory, it was erased too. Backups are good.

Hi jorlando,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I did backup the books. I tried loading them twice. Each time I checked the internal drive from my computer and it indicate that the firmware and books were there, but when I disconnect my JBL, rebooted and turned it on, it indicated: "no corresponding file(s) found.

Is there any way to load the ADE folder on my SD? I've loaded the 16e update numerous times, but the ADE folder does not load.

Hmm... I suspect a failure to communicate here.

When you say you "loaded the 16e update" did that mean that you made a
SD card and followed the procedure that is described in the "sticky" at the
top of the first page of this "Ectaco jetBook" forum?

Hi Ken,

Yes I followed the procedures on the Ectaco forum. At one time I had the update and internal memory working fine, but I did something to that cleared the internal memory and since I haven't been able to get my memory back or get the update to load as before.

Ok; have you tried this:

The thing is, you can fairly easily reset the JBL to factory settings and install the current
firmware on the device.

You should remove any SD card from your JBL and connect the USB cable to backup your
JBL's internal memory, to a folder on your PC's hard drive.

Reformatting the JBL's internal memory to FAT32 is a good idea and running ChkDsk on it
while you have the JBL connected to your PC with the USB cable is a good idea as well.

If you can get to the logo screen then you should be able to do this:

First if you only have one SD card then you will want to back it up to a folder on your
PC's hard drive.

Format an SD card for use during the update of the firmware. (I still use FAT16 for this
although I understand that FAT32 works as well.) The formatting will insure a clean card
and root directory into which the three update folders go.

Be sure to use a firmware update with all three folders to make the SD card. Insert the
SD card into the JBL.

Make sure the USB cable is not connected at this point.

Then you go to the Diagnostics Menu built into the JBL, it is here that you can do the
#13 - Reflash NOR and the #7 - restore factory defaults

To enter the diagnostics screen:
Reset the device. Then hold down three buttons. They are: "on/off" "zoom" and "menu". When you see the jetBook screen let go of "on.off". Keep holding the "zoom" and "menu" keys until you see a 16 item screen. It's tricky, so it may take a couple of tries.

Then you can reflash the NOR Memory and reset the JBL to factory defaults.

After that is done reset the JBL.

Now you can update the firmware as you normally would.

Follow all directions and don't play with any settings you don't understand.

This procedure should fix any firmware related problem. If you have a valid download
of valid firmware and this doesn't fix the problem then it is a hardware issue.

Luck;
Ken

Hi Ken,

Well, it worked partially. I got the internal memory working and am able to load and read books, but I can't get the firmware to load correctly. When I get to load the firmware by pushing the 2 buttons. The firmware page never loads. It just load as normally showing the files with NO ADE folder and incompatible format. Thank you for your help.

greg,

The "ADE folder" is a folder named ".adobe-digital-editions"? That folder doesn't appear since the "." in the beggining of folder's name turns it into a hidden folder under linux. it will never appear with other folders in the Jetbook's file manager.

what do you mean by "I can't get the firmware to load correctly"? What do you expect to happen?

To verify what firmware version you are really using, go to the main menu, the Settings -> 2-System Settings -> 5-Firmware Version. What software and patch version do you have?

When you "load" the update, what you are trying to do is flash the JBL's
internal system memory with the firmware data. It is not the same as just
"loading" a file or folder into the internal user memory.

Included in the update file is a separate boot up routine that starts up the
JBL a little differently than it normally appears. Some people have problems
with holding the on-off button and the right arrow button in the correct
sequence. Part of the problem is that the early instructions never mention
that you should hold the right arrow until a conformation screen appears,
(with a big check mark on it). Once you press the "OK" button, to confirm
that you really want to do the update, the update will start.

If you haven't seen the conformation screen and then pressed the "OK"
button, you haven't performed the update.

Check what your current FW and Patch versions are, as Jorlando described
and let us know what they are.

Hi Ken,

When I flash the update I don't get the firmware page. It must be the way I'm pressing the buttons. I'll keep on trying until I get it right.

I remember before when I had the update properly loaded that there was a folder named: DIGITAL EDITIONS.

Currently it shows FW as v16 and Patch "patch file not found". Thanks for your replies.

Sorry about the late replies as I'm in Thailand and I'm 14hrs ahead of you.

Greg

The Digital Editions folder is one that the ADE software, on your PC makes
on the JBL as it authorizes the device (the JBL) and prepares it to receive
decodeable files.

It looks like you have a corrupted update somehow, so you do need to do
the 0.16e update all over again. You may want to redownload the update
package, in case that was where it got corrupted.

Luck;
Ken

I think that he is not getting the firmware screen due the lack of patch.

Put your SD card with the firmware files and try entering the diagnostics mode: reset, keep pressed zoom, menu and power keys.

when the jetbook logo screen appears release power but continue pressing menu and zoom keys

When the diagnostics menu appear select "13 - reflash NOR"

You never know, but from the sequence of his replies he has reflashed the NOR memory
and it should be ready to pickup the Patch 16 data from the 0.16e update process.

I'll post details later at the hacking jetbook post, but I spent a few time today fiddling with the contents. The NOR patch is at the reflash_nor folder, version 15 (it has not changed since firmware 15, I checked the CRC)

When you use the option 13 is the content of that folder that is used.

When you update the firmware a patch version 16 is inside the firmware file.

So, if you upgrade to the last firmware and check the version you have firmware 16e and patch 16

If you use the maintenance menu and use the reflash NOR option and check it again you will see firmware 16e and patch 15

Since he got only firmware and patch is empty, I think that he needs first upload a new patch.

Let's hope that the button sequence for maintenance does not deppends from the patch... the firmware upload sequence appears to deppend...
