Canadian Reader Costs: Kindle 3 Vs Sony 650
Hi,
I'm shopping for an ereader for this holiday season, and I was wondering if anyone can tell me what the actual costs of getting a Kindle 3 to Canada are? This will help me to decide whether the Sony is worth the extra $$ if I know how much the Kindle would cost to get to me. I can purchase the Sony locally, so that's not a big deal. I'm torn over which reader to get, and I'm leaning towards the Sony, but trying to find ways to justify the extra cost. Any Canadians that could help with this decision? I'd appreciate any input. |

kindle 3 wifi comes to about $165 and the Wifi/3G $221
so the wifi kindle is still cheaper, though tbh epub support and library lending imo are worth the lack of wifi. Go to a sony store and play with the display models if you havent already, though it really comes down to what you want out of a reader. I dont spend time in wifi areas so the kindle makes no sense for me. |

Additions: I sprung $26 for overnight shipping. Kindle Lighted Leather Cove $59.99USD (go with an open-box special & you'll get the cover for less) Kindle 3G + Wi-Fi $189.00USD Item(s) Subtotal: $248.99 Shipping & Handling: $26.97 Total Before Tax: $275.96 Sales Tax: $0.00 Import Fees Deposit $29.88 Total for This Shipment: $305.84USD (this came to about $315CAD) If you need/want a touch screen, the Sony is the way to go. If you can live without that, the 3G+WiFi makes the Kindle amazingly versatile. Last edited by cjottawa; 11-09-2010 at 06:35 AM. |

Thanks for the info, that is very helpful. It's good to know they are on sale. I hope the sales stay low until after my birthday next month. Otherwise I guess I'll be hoping for Christmas sales.
Since there aren't any WiFi hot-spots where I live, and no 3G in our area either, I'm thinking that I'm going to go with the Sony. The touchscreen seems nice, and I'm looking forward to the dictionary features. I've got wireless at home, but if I'm browsing the web, I'll do it on my computer, not my ereader. Any idea how well manga performs on this reader? I've two older kids that may want to borrow it now and then, if it works OK. |

The Sony PRS-650 is more expensive than the K3 and has no Wi-fi etc. However, it does have 12 built in dictionaries which can be consulted simply by tapping twice on a word in the text. And they are good dictionaries too. The two I use mostly are the Oxford Dictionary of the English Language and the Oxford-Hachette French-English Dictionary.

Apparently, I'm not entirely correct. According to this coverage map, http://www.sasktel.com/EndecaUI/cont...roaming#maptop
We just received 3G coverage in our area. But the underlying coverage is CDMA, so as I move out of range, I won't have any signal. Most of our out of town trips lately have been to visit our cabin - which has very little cell service, and will barely be on the fringe of 3G+ coverage near the end of 2011, so it's hard to say if we'll have coverage there. The dictionary features I'm thinking will get used a fair amount. Especially if I loan it to my high school student. If it had a medical dictionary, I would use that for my own classes. |

If you didn't mind doing that whenever you wanted to switch to that reference, instead of a common English language dictionary, I think it would work. (or just leave it set to the medical dictionary if you never wanted to do "regular dictionary" lookups) |

Thanks, I'll check those out. I've just been informed that we're heading to the city for boxing day this year, so I'll probably pick one up then, after I've been able to hold an ereader in my own hands. I find these decisions much easier to make if I have the subject right in front of me. Features I had previously shrugged off suddenly become important, and those I had thought important are often not the deal-breakers I had thought them to be.

CJ Ottawa,
Can you tell me if I can get a K3 locally in Ottawa or is it only available through Amazon? Thank you in advance, Doug |

It is only available through Amazon in Canada. You could drive across the border to the nearest Best Buy or Target (not really local tho).

Sony reader is on sale at Future shop until Friday for $219.99 + a $10 off today only coupon. Is $40 off a good deal for these units or should I wait longer for a Boxing Day deal?
