need advise kindle 3 wifi vs prs 650

I new at this kind of stuff
My conditions
1. I live at Indonesia, so buying book online it's almost impossible for me.
2. I will using my ebook reader mainly for medical journals, some text book, manga scanlation and some other book.
3. so basically I will used more pdf file than other, which both of this device can read them.

I already read feature from kindle on this forum and other site via google, it's said if I sent pdf file, amazon will converted it for me for free, if I sent my journal file can they do it for me?

on prs 650 there is feature to search word on pdf files, even with prs 950 it's can search eventhough it a pdf scan file (old journal many had this type of pdf) I don't know about prs 650 or kindle will be perform with is task.

since I already off the grid, I need a more type of file it's can read, but I still confuse with one I should choose.

kindle 3 wifi or prs 650
I will buy those from ebay, since my local store didn't sell it, or both sony and amazon didn't sent this device to my country.

price, I will not lie to you guys, since both of them is expensive for me I like to choose it's carefully.

Thanks you for your advise

The word is that the kindle3 is not very adept at dealing with pdf files. Zooming to a readable size means scrolling left-right to read entire lines. I have no idea if the other mentioned is better or still marginal.

I suggest the Sony 650. It seems to handle PDFs better:

I have a prs-900. PDF support on the Sony's is better than the Kindle. That being said, I have tried to read journal articles in PDF format on the Sony, and the experience is just not that great. Picture a situation where you can't read a full page at a time, so you are scrolling alot. And if you want to go back and review an earlier passage, the process is painful and slow - since you need to wait for the e-ink to update. My understanding is that the speed has improved a bit, but I would bet the process is still tedious.

Comics also don't display vey well. The bit depth of the display isn't high enough to allow for it.

You might want to consider waiting, or looking at an android device, but there you will be getting a battery hog.

Manga displays quite well on my PRS-505, I have to say. I haven't tried colour comics. The PRS-950 now has a two-page view in landscape mode, so I think that makes scrolling through pages a lot easier. A larger reader, such as the Pocketbook 903 would probably be a better choice, but it would cost more and be less portable. There is also the Pocketbook IQ, which is an Android device with an LCD screen, but it is only $150.

so it's mean that K3 it had some difficult with journal or text book?
does amazon let user to convert their pdf (journal pdf), since the journal a copy right material, I afraid, amazon didn't let their user to convert it on kindle format.

thanks for your review

thanks bob for your reply, I already read cnet review, they said, old sony had different technology with the new one.
the old one used another layer for pressure sensitive area, in my mind it's look like garmin device, it's also had this kind of screen.
in the new prs 650 or 950 they used infra red, that's why the contras much better.
I only read the review, not experience my self that's why I come to this site, so I could ask people like you, whose using it, and give me advise.
about two column zoom fix, does it help much for reading journal Bob?
AFAIK on a few review on youtube, sony does had a history page which can used to fast page back ward.
my problem with android device they used tft screen, not e ink screen, if i had no problem with tft screen might be I will also add nook color in mind, but since I looking for e ink device, I stumble with this two device.
thanks for your answer

No problem. I have the older Sony PRS-505, and I often read journals and text books. The 650 or the 950 is better, though, because it has zoom (pan and scan), and better screens, and the contrast can be adjusted. Sometimes the text on my Sony is too small - legible, but just barely. The Kindle isn't bad for PDFs, but the Sony seems much better in my opinion.

I see, the lock zoom also make me think that for 2 column journal, it's make easier to read it, even thought it's not prefect.

may be I will pick prs 650 for that reasons, since I pessimistic that amazon will allowed his user to convert copyright pdf to kindle format. event though it's legal files.

thank you so much for you advise my friend

No problem, anytime! The new Kindle doesn't convert PDF as far as I know, I think you can just side load it or email it without converting.

Apa kabar area51 :-)

I just watched a review of the new sony pdf capability, and it has improved... But I think you'll still be up against using a little window to view a much larger document. Looks like speed has improved too.

Goood luck on your purchase, and let us know what you end up with.

I though it will converted it to kindle format

after take asleep last night, I choose prs 650 in the end
you guys at mobile read make me make up my mind, event though I know, kindle has great support (like mangle etc) or good with firmware update, not like sony does. ( the truth is I am a vaio hatter ) but may be it's had different for they ebook readers, not like viao had

I hope this the best choice I had for this time.

Kabar baik Bob
Do you speak bahasa Bob?
it's nice to be greet in bahasa ^_^

yup it's true, the window/screen not to big, but I think I will try to struggle for it, since if it to big, I can't put at my over crowded bag, and had tendency for breaking the screen.

I am end up with choosing prs 650, I already order it via ebay, on paypal it will arrive at 1 dec, but since Padang post office still had few problem because last year earthquake, it might be come little late.

but if I like it so much, I will had one for home reading, and tried to buy prs 950, it's tempting to buy prs 950, after searching it on ebay though, but may be this is my right choice right for now.

Terima kasih banyak atas bantuannya Bob*
*Thank You so much for your help Bob

Thanks guys for helping me for choosing the device, I will come often to try learning my new device, even though it's not come yet

I love this forum

Yes, congrats Area51 :-) No, I only know a few words in Bahasa. My wife is from Jakarta though.

Good luck with the post office - we always had trouble with items making it through...

Best,

Manga displays well on the 505, and I can also say it displays well on the 600, 650, nook, and kindle 3.

Of all of those, it probably looks best on the kindle 3, because of the higher contrast. Color comics are often messes of gray. It's best to convert them to a high-contrast gray-scale before placing them on the reader; They'll be much nicer.

In terms of reading textbooks on either the k3 or 650... Good luck. It's never worked out for me.

In terms of PDF support, the Kindle 3 is adequate, and the 650 is essentially on the same tier, in my opinion. Not many devices do PDFs ideally.
