Nook Color as an Entertainment Device

Who bought a Nook Color with the intent to jailbreak it and use it as an Android tablet for entertainment - videos, internet access, apps, books, music, news, magazines, games, personal email, etc? Not as a business tool and not as a primary ereader.

This is why I bought a NC. It's an Android tablet at half the cost that provides me with all the tablet I need. I have no intention of using it as an ereader, because it's too heavy. I might read an occasional book, but that's highly doubtful.

Anyone else?

Me.
Although I have an iPad, I wanted to see what a 7" tablet running Android would be like. I use it for games, video, rss feed reader, pdf magazine reader, and comic reader. My nook color is autonootered 1.1 and uses the Zeam launcher.

Compared to the iPad1, the nook color holds its own quite well. Performance, battery life, build quality, etc. are top notch IMO.

It really is an amazing device for the price.

Not me, my wife gave it to me as a Christmas present. At the time I was very happy with my Kindle 2 and Android phone.

Tried to use the nook as a reader, hated it,... rooted the nook hated it less, installed Gingerbread 2.3 --goodness, now the device rocks!

Now I rarely use my Kindle and Android phone since the nook can do most of what my phone was cable of and with Moon+/RepliGo/Kindle I can read all of the three major formats out there with the best apps of their class and use any app from the Market when I need my device as a tablet.

But to answer your question, I was trying strongly to resist altering the stock device. It was just so bad I was either going to return it or make it better. And since it was gifted to me I chose the latter.

Me.

You can't part me from my Sony for reading.

Been rocking 'Pushing Daisies' on the NC's bright beautiful screen, playing games, etc.

I am reading a book I've been longing for but was only available in non-reflowing PDF on it right now, but with the backlit screen I can only read on it for 20-30 minutes at a time, so I'm still not going to make it my ereader, but it works on the one thing the Sony doesn't.

But yeah, it's a toy and I freely admit it. A very, very nice toy.

Well I brought it as a reader and continue to use it as a reader. I love the weight of it. It is still much lighter than a hardback book and I would read those for hours. To me, it will always be a reader first and everything else second.

I may be forced to do so now. I lost my Sony 350 and the library book I was reading. My son came by yesterday to get some things, including a Kindle 3 I was giving to my DIL. He saw my 350 and immediately adopted it.

I'll sure be glad when Amazon finally implements library lending later this year. In the meantime, it's either the Color or back to borrowing a friend's 300.

I originally bought it as a reader but I always had the intention of using it for entertainment too. I guess I figured it was the best of both worlds!

My decision to buy one was heavily influenced by the ability to root. I liked the reader function well enough, but I didn't think that alone was worth the purchase. Once I looked into rooting, and all that it gave you...I bought one almost immediately.

I got mine for color content and web browsing thinking I would still use my eInk device for longer reading sessions. What I've found is my eInk device is gathering dust. It's just much easier to deal with only one device and the NC screen does not bother me at all.

BTW, I totally gave up on the stock software, I'm running CM7 only.

Ditto on the CM7. I got mine to root and it's been a pretty fun tablet, even before I put CM7 on a card to try. Now it's even more fun with smooth video streaming. I do read on it though. I almost always have a book going as well as a word doc or pdf for school and a couple tabs up in opera. Since I normally spend hours reading from my netbook screen I don't see any difference reading from the backlit nook screen.

Finally got CM7 going today and Angry Birds and the Amazon App store are once again living happily on the nook color.

I think I'm going to have to get a bigger micro SD card though because my kid likes to load a couple of movies on for car trips.

How big do they make those cards?

I got my Nook Color when B&N had their ebay sale for $199. After rooting, then moving to Froyo, now on Gingerbread. It's an amazing tablet for the price.

I believe in using devices for one primary function and maybe a few lesser ones:

My Hackintosh is for learning about the strange Mac world. Lol, I grew up a PC.
My VirginMobile LG Android cell is for calls/text and email.
My NookColor is for games, FB, web surfing, PDF magazines & color comicbook reading.
My Sansa Fuze is for audiobook listening while I run or do housework.
My new Kindle 3[w/ads] is for portable e-reading.

I know that a lot of things to charge, but I can't remember the last time I had a battery die at a critical time.

Also, the NookColor has 802.11n wireless for fast internet. And don't forget to check Amazon's Android market every day they give away a paid app for Free.

Lastly, for anyone scared to move to Gingerbread, here is a really simple walkthrough:

I bought the NC for my wife, just because she demanded an ereader and really liked the color screen of it.

After about 2 months of use, I finally - with much trepidation - rooted the device. Found the basic interface was the same, but was able to add some apps and some tablet functionality. The wife liked it more, started reading less and playing more games.

Just this afternoon I caved it to all the good reviews for CM7, and installed it on the internal drive. Wow, the NC has turned into a full-fledged android tablet and I like it a lot better and my wife likes it better too. I'm hoping she will continue to use it as an ereader (I put in Aldiko and the Nook for android apps), and she was impressed with the number of books I transferred via calibre.

Personally, I prefer the nook classic as an ereader to the NC. As a tablet, CM7 really makes it shine.

I bought mine as a well-rounded media portal, something that would be serviceable for audio, video, and books, with web access and gaming as an afterthought. It was definitely CM7 and all the resources over at XDA that sold me, plus I appreciated that B&N made the NC so mod-friendly in the first place, directly counter to the "You'll use this device how we tell you to use it" approach of some competitors. I expected it to be primarily an e-reader in terms of time spent using it, but also wanted a single device I could take on the road without draining or tying up my phone (I hate calls and texts muting my tunes ).

I'm only two weeks in, but pretty happy with it on all counts. It does get a little uncomfortable as a reader as-is, mainly because of the hard plastic, but I have a case on the way that should improve things considerably, and I think most people using e-readers expect to use them with a case. I have played around with some games, too--SNESoid is pretty amazing.
