kindle DX in UK- ever ?

does anyone have a prediction as to when / if Amazon will sell the kindle DX in the uk from co.uk store, and at what price

I asked amazon - got a " don't know" response.

it would be very expensive to import one, if UK customs add extraVAT + fees, and very annoying if it then went on official Uk sale a few days later !

I wonder if Amazon will ever sell the DX in the UK because even though it has been popular, it doesn't sell on the same scale as the 6" Kindle and is more of a niche product.

Add to the mix that we're seeing colour tablet devices coming out with rumours of Amazon perhaps devising a more multimedia colour device - well I wonder about the long-term future of the DX.

But that is my opinion and Amazon may well choose to spring some surprises so who knows!

You'd think that if Amazon was planning to release the DX in the UK, they would do so before Christmas anyway.

Wouldn't VAT still be charged if you get them shipped in and sold by a UK store?

yes but with a uk store you see the price & vat at time of order, and you get free, or cheap, trackable shipping.

- with an import you
1. pay a huge shipping charge
2. don't know if UK customs will then add another huge charge
3. don't know if UK Royal mail will then add a handling fee for collection of charge 2
4. can't afford to send the item back if there's a problem with it

so all in all - not a great plan

Hello

Just received one DXG in Portugal last Friday.

What you pay is what it’s stated when you simulate buying it on the Amazon.com site, nothing more - in this case shipping and handling $20.98 and import fees deposit $84.00 on the top of the $379 of the device itself.

Maybe someone in the UK can confirm or deny this happening for your country, but for what I have seen, my experience is the common one (and also what is stated in Amazon’s website).

so $379+84+20 = $ 483

that is just way overpriced for me - I can get a fully functional 10 inch screen netbook with wi-fi for much less, then run kindle for PC on it.

if they were to sell it for the equivalent of $379 from within the UK ,with free shipping & with free returns if DOA, then I'd be tempted

I had a BeBook mini before (now sold on) and I purchased the DXG before the K3 was released.

The main reason for buying the DXG was to view pdfs. I know that the K3 (and new Sony's) diaplsy pdfs better, but imo pdf's are best viewed without scrolling across a single page. To do that I worked out that a minimum horizontal resolution of 800 was needed and the DXG was the only resonably priced and existing (ie not vapour-ware like Plastic Logic) non-lcd electronic display device.

Wasn't trying to be critical of your choice, just wondered if you thought it was worth the extra I've never even seen a DX in the flesh
