The Kindle and the Sony Reader use exactly the same screen, yes.
No 6" reader is good for reading PDF books. A PDF file is a "digital representation" of a printed page, and can only be viewed well on a screen that is the same size (or larger) as the size that the PDF is formatted for. Most PDF files are formatted for much larger page sizes than that of a 6" reader. The Kindle DX has a larger screen, of course, and is much better for reading PDFs as a result. |

Kindle WiFi 3 screen is BETTER than Sony PRS 900 screen.
The Kindle WiFi 3 screen is not a touch enabled screen. Thus, it has one less layer than the Sony PRS 900 screen. It does not reflect light the same way and is much clearer.
In addition the Kindle WiFi 3 screen has better technology and is more readable than the Kindle 1 or Kindle 2. |

The default way that the Kindle displays pdf is to shrink an entire PDF page to fit on its 6" screen. This makes the print much smaller than the original. Sometimes it is readable that way, sometimes not. However the Kindle does have the option (available through the AA button) to show the page in landscape mode instead. In this mode it fits the width of the page to the height of the screen, and you turn the Kindle sideways to read. It shows about 45% of the page this way, so you have to click "next page" three times per pdf page as you read, but it does make the print closer to the size it was intended to be. I find this pretty usable (if kind of awkward) for standard (8 1/2 by 11) pdfs. I have not used it on a pdf that was entirely scanned images of text, but I imagine it would work. I have a K2--the newer K3 is supposed to have better pdf handling options, where "better" means zoom and pan--you still have the "small screen big page" problem but you have more options about how you want to show the big page on the small screen. So if this sounds like it might work for you, I'd advise getting a Kindle--Amazon lets you return it without charge (I think without charge; you might have to pay shipping but it wouldn't be much) for a month, so you can try it out and see what you think. |

Yes, the PRS-900 screen is less clear than the Kindle 2 screen (even though both are Vizplex screens), because of the Sony's touch layer. However, the PRS-950 has the same improved Pearl screen as the K3 (but in a larger size, 7" vs 6") and its touch screen does not add an extra layer. All three new Sony's use the same touch technology and the Pearl screen, and the screen is just as good as the Kindle 3's.
