what and when for the kindle 4

anyone have any idea when we'll be seeing the kindle 4?
has there been an upgrade every year? I can't even remember...

my guess is that the new one will be smaller still and likely have more storage (not very daring) but will not get a color screen this time.
maybe we'll get a touch screen instead. that's likely inevitable at some point..

anyone have any predictions?

good point. it's probably a fairly pointless question I asked. It's a lot easier to dream about what we'd like to see rather than what will be.
I'd still like to know when the k4 is likely to come out though.

I don't know that they can improve on much that they couldn't do easier with upgraded software.
I think if anything, they'll come out with a tablet type of ereader.

Amazon undoubtedly considers this a trade secret. If people knew the date, they would hold off on buying the K3. Then, when the K4 date slipped, the company would have pie in their face.

Microsoft of course does announce products well in advance, living with the pie in the face from delays.

If I owned Amazon, moderators on this board would be gifted advance copies of upcoming devices, both to build excitement and to learn about bugs. But hardware companies rarely work like that. Apple is also secretive.

I hope they never add a touch screen. I love my iPhone, but if I was reading constantly, the fingerprints would be really annoying. I have a k3 and love it. Content to wait for the color kindle -- maybe 3 years from now?

I also don't think we'll see a K4 anytime soon because as far as I know the K3 still sales very well and probably will continue to do for a long time. When the Sony 6xx series gets cheaper then I think it could hurt the K3 sales a lot.

Edit:

Maybe they'll first release a K3 touch edition before a K4?

iPhone has a capacItive Glass touch screen, making fingerprints very visible. There are other touch technologies amazon can use.

I think judicious use of physical buttons and touch screen would allow you to do most things without touching the screen and at the same time get rid of the keyboard for a bigger screen / smaller device.

i would like to see a bigger screen area (i mean, reducing the space for the keyboard /just/ slightly without making the whole device bigger; a little goes a long way)

i really hope they don't. that would be horrible. i want my e-ink.
I really don't think they will though. at least, not at the expense of the e-ink screen. they have a good thing going and have the majority of the market with what they're doing now.
besides, I think if they were going to do a tablet it would've happened by now.

I would like to see a slightly bigger screen myself. they could keep the device the same size by ditching the physical keyboard and adding a touchscreen.

It doesn't really seem all that fragile to me.
and is it really glass? it feels like plastic and it certainly doesn't smudge like glass.
