Kobo store exclusive
Nice to see that Kobo books gets a bit of an exclusive on the Giller Prize-winning book "The Sentimentalists".
Looks to be a printing bottleneck caused by a small publisher One irony is that the prize-winning book, much lauded among those who have seen it for its craftsmanship, is currently only available electronically by users of Indigo’s Kobo e-reader. ltr |

I bought the book for $9.89 on kobobooks. At that time, it was listed in the way that non-agency books are--with a standard price and then a discounted price. That meant that you could use coupons, etc. A 20% off coupon made it a real bargain.
It appears that Gaspereau Press decided to end that option as now it is listed for $14.95 with only that one price listed--the indication that the publisher is dictating the price, which cannot be discounted. PS: A representative from Kobo contacted me. He suggested I talk to Kobo about the pricing as he does not have an Agency price fix agreement. He also said that the quote was not intended to be the put-down that I (and many others) felt it to be. Last edited by taming; 11-12-2010 at 01:12 PM. Reason: PS: New information |

I was going to get it ... but decided not to. But with the 20% off coupon, it's back to $11.95 again ... and I might spring for it, just to support the Giller process. I also notice Annabel, by Kathleen Winters, has dropped from $17.99 to $14.99 and, with the discount, is $11.95 as well. It is also short-listed for the Governor General Award coming up next week.

I wouldn't be quite as annoyed by the price if Gaspereau had not been so insulting to people who buy ebooks. I remember that you were the one who found the quote initially, SP.

Thanks for that link Taming. I harbor a certain sentimentality myself for the physical book, and appreciate the point Gaspereau Press is making, but to consider e-reading ephemeral is short-sighted.
Perhaps Gaspereau will be one of the few left standing in the coming years as producers of nostalgic handcrafted physical books, as I foresee e-readers rendering the book printing industry to a niche pastime. ltr |

It's interesting to see what is happening with some print books these days. I know that Bush's new book is also being issued in a limited run fancy slipcovered and signed edition. There are certain pBooks from my life that evoke powerful sense memories that I don't know I will have with digital editions. When I handle those volumes, those memories come rushing back. Nice.
