Does Kindle3's Wifi work in China? Can I register my account?
Hi, I'm living in Shanghai, China, for some months and I'm thinking on buying a Kindle 3 Wifi. Amazon doesn't send it to China, but they sell it everywhere here (they buy it in USA, take to China and resell in shops).
After reading a lot, if I had understand correctly, what doesn't work here is the option to buy books from the Kindle itself, but you can transfer them from the computer after buying them with a US account in the computer. But I'm not sure if the wifi works here, for web browsing I mean. If works, I'm also not sure if I can register my Amazon account, but if I can't, I'm not sure if this is a problem, because I won't be able to buy books from the Kindle anyway... Can someone help me? Thanks |

I think that the article said it all. If you are using wifi you will be censored. If you are usign Amazon's 3G whispernet you can get around China's censorship(for now). Amazon has designed the Kindle to work in 100 countries, so i'm pretty sure that China is one of those countries.

Actually, the Kindle is not shipped to or supported in China. I am assuming that there are issues with censorship, copyright laws, and the like.

on 3G, you are on whispernet, and directed through amazon's server(that compress text/images to reduce cost) not sure whether this is still the case in wifi mode |

Sorry I should have referred to the GSM technologies when referring to the 100 countries, not necessarily Amazon user account availability. The article also state:
"The 3G Kindle uses global system mobile (GSM) communication technology, which gives WiFi coverage in more than 100 countries, including China. The WiFi-only Kindle would rely on a local Internet connection This seem to indicate that using WiFi connectivity would probably involve censorship. I think that the user can only get by the censorship while using the GSM network. |

oh noes.
what about the forbidden 12-14 wifi bands? I have no idea about them except we are not supposed to use 12-13 in the US though we technically CAN, but 14 is illegal, except for like japan (in the US). My friend had some fujitsu laptop and router that he brought with him that operated on the 14 band I believe. Pretty funny that he was breaking the law using that in the country. So anyways, unlikely that they will care/track it if you do get one, and I doubt the device will put out harmful interference or use improper bands (Kindle is designed to adhere to international standards) wireless band restrictions varies by region but the AP determines the channel, not the client. And if you are smuggling one into China you won't care about this anyways. |

on 3g only, whatismyip.com says kindle proxy on wifi, whatismyip.com says my router's ip address i guess you can only bypass the firewall on 3g, as what duckeedoug says Last edited by paperwastage; 11-04-2010 at 10:03 PM. |

I already have my Kindle 3 Wifi. Wifi works and it can connect to my Amazon account and even download free books.
