I do have to wonder how it is that the other publishers claim they can't offer discounts, but Kobo does it all the time.

Whatever passes for "agency" books in a given geographic area are excluded from the discount coupons. I do wonder how sustainable it can be for them to be discounting so many of their non-agency sales.

Coupon works multiple times
As per the subject line, the "weekend" code is multi-use (at least on the Australian store).

Other retailers DO have discounts: Fictionwise off has % off coupons and others, such as Borders and Sony, have sales and reduced prices. Booksonboard still has their rewards (rebate) program. I have noticed, though, that some of the Kobo prices have been jacked up to where they are more or the same as Amazon or B&N even with the coupon. Originally after the agency thing started they said they weren't going to offer coupons anymore but then reinstated them.

I have not noticed that--sometimes one is higher, sometimes the other, but I have not seen a price increase before the issuance of a coupon.

I didn't mean necessarily right before the coupon - I just meant sometimes the price is already higher than other places even with the coupon. Also they, like a lot of places, have raised their prices since the agency 5 deal was put in place. This could be just true in the US, too, not necessarily for you.

I love the coupons because they do have Harlequin books cheap like $3.89 where HQ has it for $4.06 and Amazon $3.69 a book then with the coupon $1 off it's like $2.89 at Kobo. So that's where I buy my HQ books from.
However it seems Kobo must of changed credit card processors in the last few weeks because starting this month I'm now charge a foreign transaction fee on all purchases by them. It like 15 to 30 cents per transaction the last 4 books I bought. I'm in the USA so this probably doesn't apply to those in other countries but something to take in account if you want to know the real price you will be charge and if you use a Debit card or Debit Gift Card to buy with and don't have those extra few cents in there things can get sticky. I went over mine because of this and wound up paying an overage fee with my CC provider. At first it said the amount on the invoice but once the charge was completed a week later the fee was added. Kobo is still the cheapest around for me to shop for my books once I take the fee into account so it doesn't happen again. ![]() |

Oh yes, that's a good deal on the Harlequin books.
The charges you are referring to are charged by your bank, not Kobo. It's a percentage of each amount for processing an international order. You can look at one of your previous bills and figure out what the percentage is, then the next time you buy you will know ahead of time what it is. My bank does this too and it's really annoying to see all those little charges when I'm trying to balance my account. It's the only thing I dislike about shopping at Kobo. They've been talking about starting to have gift certificates and I hope they do. That way we would just have one charge at the time we buy the certificate. |

Yes really good for recent HQs but you want to make sure the books are from this year or you will get stuck with the Kobo version of the book which is plain text and very poorly formatted. I have bought 4 books from them like this. Double chapter headers and no bold text, italics...etc The ones publish this year seems to be the ones from the publisher and formatted correctly with images and everything so it's a really good deal to get from them.
Gift Certificates would be a great idea! We can hope they implement that soon! I admit my bank must of have let those charges slide for awhile but no more obliviously. To tell the truth I didn't realize Kobo was not an American company. So I was surprise to see the fees at first then went and saw they are in Canada not the U.S. ![]() My bank adds the fees to the total price so it's hard to figure out the percentage I suppose I can just ask them. ![]() |

I've lived in Canada for 10+ years and have had dual citizenship for about half that time. I was initially amazed to see my bank here charging fees for US purchases. I'm sorta smiling now to see it happening in reverse. Bad taming. Bad bad taming. As the Canadian and Australian dollar hover around par with the US dollar, US buyers may see more of this.

re: the foreign transaction fees...I did not realize they would occur either. I only made my first purchases from Kobo last weekend and didn't recall seeing this discussed before. If the website was kobobooks.ca instead of .com, it wouldn't have been so surprising to me. I mean, it is only between 10-40 cents per item, but still... They have notices in Help/FAQ about VAT and other taxes...it just kinda seems like they could say for US Residents that your card company may change a transaction fee. The coupons still offset that but I wasn't expecting to see the extra charge.

That's how I felt when I started seeing off amounts on my Card instead of what was on the invoice. A little notice would be nice on the order form page.
I no longer shop there because my card provider seems to be having issues with whoever they now use for processing. ![]() Also I have bought several books that turn out to be plain text poorly formatted Kobo's own epub conversion instead of the publisher version. There is no notice on the book's page and no way of knowing which version you are getting. Some I paid full price on when I could of bought it elsewhere and got the prettier version. Missing pics are a bad thing in some books. Not to mention Kobo forgot to charge me for two books I bought over a month ago and then out of the blue they took their money. Luckily it was still in there but I have never ever had that happen in all my years of shopping online so to be on the safe side I shop elsewhere. Now I have gotten some nice deals and good books from them in the past and they are great for non U.S. customers to get books that aren't Geo restricted but they do have their quirks. ![]() |

Blossom--US Banks are making changes on their end as they add fees on to purchases made from Canadian companies. It is equally possible that some of the problems that your bank attributes to Kobo may actually be related to changes in how they handle foreign transactions.
