Reader for children's books
Instead of creating a collection of hundreds of children's books (Dr. Seuss, Golden Stories, etc) I would like to get an ereader that I could use to sit down and read with my younger children. I know the Nook Color is coming out ($250) but I'm wondering if there is another option that might be a little cheaper. I would like to get two so my wife can read to the children on one and I can read to the children on the other. I'm not interested in where I'd get the books from, I just want to know what options might be available. It would only be used for reading children's books since we have a kindle 3 and a nook 3g that we use to read novels, non-fiction, etc. Any thoughts?

not in color and at least not of good quality. If you have a tablet that is being sold at Walgreens, that's kind of a red flag.
I think once the Nookcolor comes out they will have a strong foot into this really untapped market. They announced and ebook program for parents and children Kids Club and Nook Kids. They are really going to be dedicating the overall experience for parents and children. I like what they are doing So as of right now, I don't see anyone out there that is on the level of Nook color and Bn's Kid's http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...googlenews_wsj Last edited by boswd; 10-29-2010 at 11:45 PM. |

Also wanted to add that I'm not interested in getting a netbook for this situation either. Is there nothing else besides the nook color?

Cheaper color options would be a myriad of generic Android tablets with low end specs, starting around $100.
If it were me, I wouldn't consider any of them. I prefer quality products with high end specs. I'd get the Nook Color. It's a high end tablet at a bargain price. Whatever you do, compare the features and specs. Keep in mind that all of the tablets cheaper than the Nook Color are saving money by using cheaper parts with fewer features and/or lower specs. For example, the displays on the cheaper tablets are resistive touch with lower resolution. Whereas Nook Color uses a high end capacitive touch IPS display with higher resolution. Compared side-by-side, the difference is very noticeable. |

What is the difference between resistive and capacitive touch? What are the names of some of these lower end Android tablets that you are talking about? Is it really going to matter when just reading children's books?

So basically the consensus is to just pony up the $250 for the Nook Color? No other thoughts?

BN seems to be very commited to the Kids demographics and you'll get updates, support, over the air bug fixes etc. |

Capactive is used on more expensive screens. This is the very light touch, where you can swipe, slid and just touch. the iPhone, iPad, Samsung, Droids and a whole host of other use this. usually when you see resistive you can pretty much bet it's used on cheaper screens. it's kind of first generation touch screens. As far as will it matter? only you can answer that question. |

An alternative would be the Pocketbook IQ which will be available shortly.
